We were making up for lost time at today's meeting by having two
speakers for the price of one. Kirk Helmberger, the store manager
of WalMart, who was scheduled for last week gave us an update on
the opening of the new Superstore. The store will open its doors
to customers for the very first time next Wednesday January 26th
at 8:00 a.m. The store will encompass 203,000 square feet, employ
a doubled staff of 519 people and include such amenities as a
locally owned McDonalds, small hair and nail salons, a tire-lube
express, a seasonal HR Block, fresh live lobster tanks, and all
the departments from the old store with groceries included. Kirk
says the thing that is the most impressive and that will make
shopping easier is the wide aisles. He then gave us some
information to offset some of the rumors that have been overheard
about Walmart. He has worked for the store 7 years. Seventy
percent of their employees work full time with benefits. In his
seven years WalMart has given a million dollars back to the
community much of it through the Volunteer hours payment which
allows employees to donate their time and earn money for charities
of their choice. Gander Mountain with an "Up North" partner will
take over the current building. |

Our second visitor was Reverend Bob Evans from the Temple Baptist
Church who is also the manager of the Sharing Bread Soup Kitchen.
He told us a very poignant story about a minister who goes out to
watch the train every day because that is the only thing that goes
through town that he doesn't have to "push". He then went on to
explain that he wasn't here to push the soup kitchen but to thank
all of the members of Sertoma who have already become involved in
the program. One of the great benefits of it according to Pastor
Evans is the fact that it brings everyone in the community
together since all denominations are involved as well as local
service clubs. Julie Sullivan spoke up and said her homeowner's
group was there just before Christmas and it was a wonderful
experience. All volunteers are welcome to just show up at 5:00
p.m. but it is best to call ahead ( 218-829-4203)to bring your
group of 4-6 any Monday through Saturday at the Temple Baptist
Fellowship Hall on 10th and Oak. |

| Announcements |
| Only 30 more couples can sign up to attend
the gala February 10th Party at Confidence Learning Center.
No Steve Mau and Dave Clausen had to admit they were NOT the
dueling pianists when Steve and Diane Ulmen were making their
announcement today. Gary Loge had some real trouble with the
pronunciation of the word "pianist" Trust the dog pound to be
obtuse. Anyway, you need to make up your mind about attending
the Valentine's Party soon--tickets will be sold to the other
area clubs if you don't snatch yours up now!. |
| Please check the volunteer hours sheets
that Joyce Anderson has available. We are trying to get an
accurate number to send into the International as well as
assess how our membership participates and what we can do to
encourage more people to become involved. If you are not
attending meetings regularly but still volunteer, please
contact Joyce at 828-5176 (W) or 829-6721 (H). |
| Board Meeting Minutes went out by email but
the big news is the Bid has been approved for the 2008
Regional Convention. This will be our third hosting of the
event if it is approved. |
| Rick Besmehn is heading up a wood cutting
committee to go out and chop some wood for the folks who
just about frozen to death this past weekend. Rick will have
all the details if you call him at Lakes Area Paint and Body

| Jan. 22 - Bucket Checkers Wanted -
Mike Howard (828-8224) is looking for people to check buckets
at the $150,000 Ice Fishing Tournament. This is a fund raiser
for Camp Sertoma. You have to be on the ice at 7 a.m. and you
are finished in time to join your group and participate in the
event. Pam is also looking for one person for a comfy
inside ticket selling job that morning from 7:00-10:30 for the
same event. |
| Feb 10 - Denny Benjamin and the social committee have decided to go for an all out gala event that will not be a Holiday Party but instead will be a Valentine’s Celebration. It is scheduled for Thursday, at the Mariucci Lodge at Camp Confidence. Seating is limited so you need to sign up early. They are also requesting that you pay when you sign up at a cost of $35 per person. Promises are for a great meal with top notch entertainment and more details to follow. |

The Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club
presented several awards at its January 19th Meeting. Scott
Fisher, a member since September of 1982, received this highest
club honor for the year 2004.
Making the presentation was Charter Member Charles Bartels. He
was assisted by Reed Campbell, who originally sponsored Scott's
membership. Scott's wife Sue was an honored guest.
Mr. Bartels remarked, "I am excited and pleased to present this
award to a person who has deserved it for years." He then went on
to talk about Scott's many involvements in Sertoma including two
years as secretary, several years as Chairman of the Pipe and
Drape Committee (the
group's major fund raiser), his chairmanship
of the Mariucci Fiesta one year and his involvement in the latest Sertoma project which has been evident to everyone in Brainerd
this past summer-the placing of flags on holidays.
Scott and Sue own Northeast Liquors, have a home on Round Lake,
and he was instrumental in forming the Round Lake Association of
which he is currently president. Scott received a plaque and Mr.
Bartels concluded the ceremony by stating, "Scott is a quiet
person that listens to conversations and ideas and then gives
meaningful input that results in growth and development for the
Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club."
Also honored at this time were Joe Schulte who received his
Centurian Award and Steve Augustinack who rose to the level of
Senator 1. |

| Rumor Corner - |
-
Clausen's new nickname is "Clutz" He is pictured attempting
to get the traveling microphone to work but that was just the
beginning of a truly bad "hair" day. He forgot about the pledge
and the prayer. He couldn't find the missing pens. It went from
bad to worse so his closing statement ended up being "I need a
beer!" Thanks Dave for stepping up to the plate and filling in
for Rory.
- John Raboin will be opening a Noodles are Us Concession at
the Walmart Superstore. If that doesn't work he wants to be a
Pilot Test Site at Walmart's attorney services to
go.............
- Karla Nelson is off on a romantic middle of the week
rendezvous on the ski slope.
- I don't think I will be calling on Charlie Bartels to custom
install any snow at my house. The horses and I think we have
enough.
- The dog pound still thinks it is spelled peeanist.
- A special thanks to all who welcomed me back after my sick
leave day last week. Special thanks to Kirk and Joe who made my
job easier by not having a program.
