Brainerd Sertoma Speaker - Linda GettelmanLinda Gettelman, Executive Director of the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce was the first speaker of the year for the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club. Although she has only lived here for six years, she has been a summer visitor or resident most of her life. She remarked, “This is a job I love because it is a culmination of all my careers.” Her love for the job certainly showed in her enthusiastic presentation. The Nisswa Chamber has grown 41% in the last two years to its current membership of 330. The community itself continues to grow and it is definitely a tourist and business destination. The 150,000 visitors to their website at www.nisswa.com is certain proof of that with inquiries about lodging, retail and professional services, and business opportunities. Information for members is at www.nisswachamber.com There you can find details about “Nisswa at Night” which is their after hours meetings for members and potential members. External customer service is their number one goal and as Linda said, “We will do anything it takes to help our customers.” The group is dynamic and working to improve services with workshops. Their mission statement is a result of one such meeting and states their goal to make Nisswa “the best destination to live, work and play in the Brainerd Lakes area.” They are also striving to be a strong effective organization focused on promoting businesses, community, and quality of life.” She concluded her speech with some philosophy that hit home to our service oriented group. The Paradoxical Commandments have been around since the 60’s when Doctor Kent Keith devised them for a booklet for student leaders.
  1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self centered. Love them anyway.
  2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
  3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
  4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
  5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
  6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shut down by the smallest men and women with the smallest ideas. Think big anyway.
  7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
  8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
  9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
  10. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Greg Larson of Remax of Nisswa is a personal friend of Michael’s and assures us that the concert will be tremendous, Michael is very enthusiastic about visiting the area, and that we should be prepared not only to hear some fine music, but also to be highly entertained. See Jim Potvin if you would like to help coordinate this activity.

June 12 - Minnesota Twins are sponsoring a Sertoma Night. The more people who attend the game, the more money we will have to donate to a charity since tickets will be sold at regular prices with discount which goes up based on the number of tickets sold becoming dollars for charity.
July 11-17 Great Plains Region Camp Sertoma—volunteers needed to cook, donations of food or ideas of where to get donations welcome.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Rumors Corner:

  • Paul Koering made a flying visit to Sertoma today to hug all the girls, try to collect $50 from Trent Baumann and to remind our speaker that he saved the turtle races!
  • John Raboin has another new career-pro wrestling.
  • Karla is Kruising—be sure to ask her about her TWO trips to Florida when you next see her.
  • Edie is falling behind in the job race, Lynn is now with another company.
Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
