Bonnie
Cumberland, Sertoma member and Affiliate Coordinator for the
Central Minnesota Community Foundation was today’s honored
speaker. Bonnie had a serious topic to present but her extensive
training as teacher, mayor, victim’s advocate, church committee
member and a long life dedicated to community service made this
a very well-organized, informative and humorous production. Pam
started the humor ball rolling when she accidentally took a
picture of Bonnie’s “best side” when she was bending over to
retrieve one of her four visual aides which turned out to be a
cute "builder bear". Rod Converse got into the mix when he
announced that her visual aide “tree” was actually plastic and
she promptly collected a dollar fine from him for her
foundation. Her first visual was a hat which represented her
recap of the many hats she has worn and continues to wear
including her own television show, “ISD Insights”. She then got
into the purpose of her organization. The Central Minnesota
Community Foundation has its main office in St. Cloud. They have
a 35 million dollar foundation base, 1.5 million of which is
earmarked for the Brainerd area. They are in the business of
getting dollars into the community to help strengthen it and
make
it grow. They accept grant applications to get these funds, and
twice a year give out about $20,000 in one or two thousand
dollar increments. Deadline for the first grant applications is
February 2nd and the second round applications are due in August
and given out in September. Bonnie remarked, “I believe in this
organization and it is an opportunity that many of you will
appreciate”. She encouraged everyone to consider donating to the
foundation, applying for grants for non profit organizations,
and even volunteering to serve on the board of directors.
Incidentally, we learned that some trees get 272 feet tall, some
get 40 feet across, and some are made out of plastic and can
cost you money if you happen to notice the plastic part. |

Rumors Corner: |
-
Julia
Sullivan in now introducing herself as a retired karaoke
singer—she and Jim did sing very pretty at the Holiday Party.
- It is only two weeks to baby Ryan.
- Charlie Bartels is headed to Cancun.
- Congratulations to Rick Besmehn on 30 years in business. He
mentioned that Les Franz was his first customer. Networking
definitely pays off at Sertoma –about 30 people had to stand up
and admit that Rick did work on their cars too.
- Jeff Kozitza is in training as harem leader according to
Mike Howard.
- Rory Coit got fined for lending Dave Clausen a book that
Dave lost and now feels bad about—only our alumni Sergeant could
come up with such a convincing story for fining someone.
- Pam should have been fined big time for putting the
Christmas Lights Meeting at the local grocery store instead of
at Kristine Welle’s “Super Place”. Mr. Clausen instead decided
to give that fine to Lori Ukkelberg simply because she is his
neighbor.
- Don’t ask Bill Mitsch what he got fined for—something to do
with gold bracelets, and plasma TV’s and the guys in charge of
ladies of the evening.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.

new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy
to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any
photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow
Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job
or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
