The
March of Dimes was the topic of discussion at today’s very well
attended Sertoma meeting. Attendance was at 94 which maybe a
record at Bonanza. Sue Parent, Central Division Director based
in St. Cloud, gave us some history of the accomplishments of the
March of Dime as well as their current focus. Sue talked about
how the March of Dimes came into being—an organization started
by Franklin Roosevelt and renamed by Eddie Cantor when he asked
everyone in American to send in a dime to help fight polio. The
March of Dimes is the only non-profit organization to achieve
its original founding goal when their research lead to the polio
vaccine. Since then they have concentrated on “Saving babies,
together.” They have funded research for ten Nobel Prize
winners, supported and had a large part in developments in
neonatal intensive care, surfactant development, and the PKU
Test for retardation and preventing birth defects in the womb.
She handed around several visual aides which helped those of us
not familiar with premature infants to realize how very small
they can be. Their current focus is to prevent
premature
births. Of the 1300 babies born every week in Minnesota, about
123 are pre term. The organization is focusing on research and
raising public awareness about prematurity which they call a
national crisis since it is the leading killer of newborns. The
Star Chef occasion on January 22 at Breezy Point Resort starts
at 6:00 p.m. and gives you a chance to taste wonderful dishes
from all the best cooks in the area and is raising money for
their cause. On May 1st you are invited to participate in the
Walk American which takes place at Central Lakes College. More
information is available at their website
www.walkamerica.org.
Volunteers and donations are always welcome. |

Rumors Corner: |
|
|
- Mark Korte has a new job—Hawk’s chauffeur. Speaking of Hawk,
they have decided that he is a Madonna wannabee since he just
introduces himself as Hawk these days.
- Mike Howard is the Mission Impossible Wannabee—we were all
disappointed when he didn’t explode after his little Dr. Apathy
presentation.
- Tami Webb should be avoided on the streets of Brainerd—she
files her fingernails while she is driving.
- “I can change if I have to I guess” is Paul Gropper’s new
motto—must have something to do with the wedding next week.
Don’t worry if you haven’t been invited—the actual party is
sometime next summer.
- Jeff Kozitza got fined for abandoning Hawk; Verna got fined
for not abandoning Hawk.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
