Brenda
Farrell, Marketing Manager for Junior Achievement in the
Brainerd Lakes Area, was the guest speaker at today's noon
meeting. The room was packed with a record attendance of first
of the year enthusiasts who viewed her video and listened to her
explain how important this program was to Brainerd area
students. Her principal focus for this talk was an upcoming
event that is new for 5th and 6th grade students. Seventy two
students from Lowell and Garfield schools will be headed for
Exchange City on Jan 21st. It is located in Maplewood, Minnesota
and is a collection of fourteen kid-sized shops in a 12,000
square foot space where students participate in real experiences
in operating a town. By preparing for and performing the roles
of producers, consumers and entrepreneurs, the students learn
first-hand about economic processes that will effect their
futures. The students could wear the hat of "policeman", "judge"
or "cafe worker" just to name a few. Students have to deal with
borrowing money to start their businesses, paying for things
like health insurance, and working with raw materials to produce
a product and sales that will result in their succeeding by
paying back their loan at the end of the workshop. All aspects
of a community from the mayor through the newspaper and radio
stations are part of this city run by kids. Teachers spend two
weeks before and after the trip preparing the students for the
day and following up on their learning experiences.
They
learn what it means to personally earn and manage money and
began to relate what they are studying in the classroom to life
skills. President Tami Webb presented Brenda with a check for
$300 to help sponsor the costs of the trip for Brainerd
students.
Brenda went on to explain a little about the history of
Junior Achievement. One interesting fact is that the program was
founded by the same person who started 4H to attempt to get city
students more involved in their communities. She encouraged the
business people in the audience to consider becoming part of the
program. Volunteers go into classrooms working with curriculum
and step by step handouts to teach the students about the
business world. It involves a 45 minute session per week for
five to eight weeks. Call Brenda at 820-8552 to volunteer or to
ask more questions about the program. They are attempting to
reach about twice as many students this year as they did last
year and need volunteers.
Brenda concluded her presentation with a t-shirt giveaway.
The design is changed every year and is one of the awards
students can work for in Junior Achievement. Winners were :
Karen Owen, Brian Skogen, Les Franz, Joleen Jensen and Julie
Sullivan. |

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

- Tom Rosenberger shared his experience with the mass media
investigating the "Black Hole" on North Long Lake. He personally
favors the seismic explanation whereas some are leaning toward
the alien theory.
- Mike Boen showed us all the winners from the football fund
raiser for Northern Lights. Unfortunately the sergeants picked
up on the winners and fined them--just the $100 and $50 winners.
- Dave Clausen got commended for his letter writing skills and
his great tie.
- Tami and Mike Howard had a bit of a public argument over
whose new members Sandy was--but the important part is the
Gaylord Club recommended us highly.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
