Sgt. Curt S. MowersSgt. Curt S. Mowers was the honored guest and speaker today at Sertoma. He combined a very serious subject with a very entertaining speech. His interaction with various members of the audience was good for some chuckles before he got down to serious business. Curt is the Safety Education Officer of District 2800-Brainerd. In this capacity he travels a seven county district talking to groups such as ours to encourage public awareness of how serious the problem of traffic fatalities is in Minnesota. For instance, in the year 2000, 626 people were killed. That means that we average two funerals per day in the state due to careless driving. Locally in 2001, 59 people were killed and 36 of them were not wearing seat belts. Total traffic injuries were at 1,800 and 600 of them were not wearing restraints either. Sgt. Mowers worked as a patrolman in several areas including Aitkin and Brainerd before taking on this job. He showed us a picture of his very first traffic fatality case that involved a head on collision with a school bus. He showed us a graph constructed from the little book published by the state each year and entitled “Crash Facts”. He then went on to present the four points that he wished us to remember First of all seat belts are not made for children. If you are concerned about your child’s safety, make sure they use a booster until they are adult sized. If you are ejected from the vehicle, your chances of being killed are four times greater. Secondly speeding is risky business. For every 10 miles an hour you drive over 50 your chances of being killed or injured goes up ten times. He emphasized the fact that .08 is under the influence of alcohol and the only thing that sobers people up is time. His last point was to recognize that many people who consider themselves good drivers are aggressive drivers who cause accidents. Do not encourage an aggressive driver—avoid eye contact, don’t return gestures, and get out of their way. The question and answer session that followed dealt with some serious issues like uninsured motorists, reporting bad drivers and the chance to ride with a patrolman (call 828-2400 and ask for Captain O’Grady). Thanks for a very informative speech Curt. Just keep this one quote from Sgt. Mowers in mind as you drive, “This year, to date, the State Patrol has investigated 22 fatal crashes and most of these people were not wearing their seat belts”. Buckle up!

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @ 820-5544 if you can't make it.

Notes
Rumor Corner
  • What fledgling senator was recently visited by a certain local attorney who shall be nameless and discovered with his feet up on his desk contemplating “fresh” law to make his mark.
  • What Swinging Sertoman returned to the fold today from far far away in the big city? (Welcome back Pooch)
  • What other Swinging Sertoman says he is taking lessons from Lester in how to be unemployed?
  • Put them together and what do they spell—nephews, haircuts, Todd Alguire and the highway patrolman?
  • And then there is Deb Ryan who was singled out for her close personal acquaintance with today’s speaker—he did assure us it was not in his professional capacity but did not elaborate further.
  • Chuck Brenny was fined by the highway patrolman for his slip of the tongue during Curt’s speech.
  • Julia Sullivan was still lamenting the fact that Godfather’s is going to be the last to open-one of our guests today was the person who is opening the Sylvan Learning Center tomorrow.
  • Tom Rosenberger tried to force us to vote between who was the better joke teller—him or the state patrolman. His joke was related to Karen Owen and her forgetfulness and was very funny.
  • The find a sawbuck winners this week if they bother to read to the bottom of the newsletter are Reed Campbell and Jeff Birks. They should call Pam and eight two nine seven seven six one to collect their money.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
