Program
Tom Rosenberger has just returned from his third trip to Haiti
and was today’s speaker at Sertoma. We viewed his expanded video
and Tom told us of some of his exciting experiences. This trip
turned out to be quite a bit more dangerous than before with
unrest in Haiti and corrupt custom officials. There is rioting
in Haiti now because there is a movement to overthrow the
current government. The good airstrip that the mission built for
its own use has been shut down by the authorities who use the
excuse that they do not want drug smugglers using it. Tom and
his crew did manage to bring all of the shoes he purchased along
with many bags of school uniforms sewed in Louisiana to the
Mission but their bribe to the customs officials cost them an
extra $400. Tom encouraged us all to continue supporting this
worthwhile program. He is “completely broke” and his spent all
of his shoe money. A five dollar donation buys a pair of
excellent leather tennis shoes obtained through special sources
that Tom has developed. He took this opportunity to thank the
members of the club for their past generosity and encourage us
to continue to support this very worthwhile endeavor.
We learned quite a bit about Haiti. It is about 1/3 the size of
Minnesota and is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
The mission is in the poorest area of the country which sits 700
miles west of Miami. Access is mostly by air since the roads are
so poor. It is a country where people live in little shacks
about the size of a small garage with no plumbing and no
electricity. One of the things the mission is proud of is the
fact that they have eliminated many diseases by putting in a
water system that supplies fresh drinking water to the villages
in a unique gravity flow water system that pumps out of one
artesian well. Tom says it is a miracle since the well really
should not support all the water that it provides. Father Glen
who has been a speaker at Sertoma with Tom has a vision to
provide a high school that will augment all the good efforts
that have been made to provide these people with a
self-sufficient economy. The project is ready to start the first
phase of a three step plan but is on hold because of the
political unrest. Tom and his crew have been concentrating on
sanitation efforts which are greatly needed at this time. All
moneys donated by Sertomans are used to fund the Shoes for Haiti
project or the high school--Tom and his team finance their
efforts from their own funds. |

The Brainerd Daily Dispatch is putting out a commemorative
edition for the Ice Fishing Tournament. Look for them soon.
They are printing extra copies to put in hotels and distribute to
fishermen when they come off the shuttle buses. |
|
See the ice fishing houses including the one by our very
own Dream Builders. Judging will be this week and the drawing for
winners is at the meeting next week. If you have tickets out
expect a phone call and a request to get to the meeting 15 minutes
early so that all tickets get into the drawing barrel. Rory Coit
is looking for volunteers to sell fish house tickets at two
locations Friday the 17th from 4-7p.m. and Sat. the 18th from 7-10
a.m. |

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
