Gary Phillips and Superintendent WalsethGary Phillips brought Superintendent Walseth back to our group today to speak about the proposed Brainerd school building plan. This plan has been brought forth at this time because the school board feels that, "The time has come to take the steps necessary to make sure we can continue our students success. Our schools that house our young people every day are aging, crowded, and in need of renovation." The 59.9 million dollar proposal is centered around a new middle school in Baxter for grades 5-8. The Mississippi Horizons would become part of the 9-12 grade campus. Closing the Franklin building and moving the district offices to the Washington building (the records alone will free up 10,000 square feet of space) are part of the plan along with a five million dollar allocation for technology. The plan will give all the students in the district some benefits. This plan will be voted on March 12 during township elections. Our district is growing by about 60 students per year. We need more space and right now the interest levels are low which will save money in the long run also. If costs rise a conservative estimate of 3% each year, the cost of the project will go up 1.8 million each year it is delayed. The Board hopes to address some of the needs not covered by the plan (a new auditorium, a swimming pool) through cooperative ventures with the city. The question and answer period that followed centered on the criticisms of the proposal and how the board and Supt Walseth were trying to deal with them. It was a very positive and informed discussion of an issue that will affect all Sertomans. It will cost the average homeowner with a $100,000 home $52 a year to continue to provide the many academic, cultural, and athletic opportunities that have helped Brainerd students "become all that they can be and pursue productive lives at whatever level they are able".

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. FAS Corner This week's winner was Joyce Anderson. Rick Besmehn didn't win.
Tom Rosenberger will be headed off to Haiti with about 24 duffel bags filled with shoes. He would like us to know he has spent all the money he was given very wisely. fas 829-7761 Thomas Pearson. Expect a full report from Tom on the progress in building the high school when he returns.
Dave Burggraff still needs some bucket checkers for the Camp Sertoma fund raiser connected with the $150,000 Ice Fishing Tournament which will be held on Gull Lake on February 9th. Call him if you can help out.
New photos are up on the Camp Confidence Web Page from the Camp's third annual winter party. This one had a beach party theme and if you want to see some hula boys (Dave Clausen and Jeff Olson) or some great dropping of the drawers (Dave Burggraff) or all the men who were Pam's dates, go to http://community.webshots.com/user/campconfidence
