Tanya Mrazek and one of her students from the Central Lakes
College American Sign Language Club, Patrick Cross, were todayıs
speakers at Sertoma. Both of them came with one goal in mind--to
encourage Sertoman enthusiastic participation in the second
annual Deaf Awareness Days to be held at Central Lakes College
on Friday April 26th and Saturday April 27th. The Deaf Expo on
Friday is set up as a hands-on exhibit directly geared to
elementary students in grades 1-6. Area schools have been
encouraged to participate and Patrick commented, "The gym was
packed last year and we got nothing but totally positive
feedback." Tanya also commented on the feedback from the deaf
community many of whom traveled in from all over the state to
participate. You can learn how deaf folks talk on the phone, see
a demonstration of a Hearing Service Dog and many more
activities including a 10 minute performance to prepare you for
the big show on Saturday night that is open to the public also.
The public is invited to attend the Expo on Friday and visit the
exhibits. Saturday is geared more towards educating teachers,
businessmen, the community, and the medical profession in the
special needs of the deaf and hard of hearing. Workshops are
held from 1:00-5:00 p.m. The culmination of the day is the
"unbelievable" National Theatre of the Deaf presentation of
"Rope Stories" along with a deaf comedian. Donıt worry, those of
us who are handicapped by not know sign language will have an
interpreter. Tanya ended the speech with a plea to encourage
everyone to participate in some way. fas 829-7761 Joelle
Schmidt. She would like to encourage us to help with the $15,000
cost of the program, to sell tickets, or to volunteer to work.
The Brainerd Morning Club is conducting free hearing screenings
at the Expo.

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
FAS Corner This week's winner was Deb Ryan. Dale Benson did not
win. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. Some of us had our picture taken with a famous person and included it
in our Christmas mail, I wonder who that was? |
