It's January and it is a great time of the year to stop and take a good look at your finances. David Johnson, husband of new member Rita Johnson, was today's guest speaker and his suggestion was to do just that. He encouraged members to go home and get their children involved in financial planning. Setting down long and short term goals on paper is another valuable tool.
"Pay yourself first," commented Dave when he was explaining the value of setting aside money for college for the kids or retirement for yourself. He then went on to discuss the problems with investments in the stock market. Investing is something that most people need to do strictly for the long term. It takes a great deal of knowledge and not a little skill to succeed in the short term side of financing. Investments that consistent with most people goals are well diversified and concentrated on well-known solid companies. The good news is that mortgage interest rates are almost sure to come down giving homeowners a break in the coming year. Thanks for some sound advice, Dave. Did you by any chance bring those white elephant items from the Rotary Christmas Party?

Sertoman of the Day
Today's honored Sertoman was Kevin Wernberg, alias Bert, long time Sertoman, and very entertaining off the cuff speaker (he handed the news people a blank sheet). From driving truck to a brush with the DOT he talked about his career that included about 14 total years of schooling that wound up in his present job with Widseth, Smith, and Nolting. Music is an important part of his life and he likes to hunt and fish. Bert commented,
" I have a lot of friends because I have a lot of power tools."
Joining Sertoma was a decision based on his love of music and desire to be part of the Swinging Sertomans. He joined in 1991 and his sponsor was Tony Gilles. He has held numerous offices and worked on many committees over the years including vice president and sergeant at arms. He was 1992 Rookie of the Year. He and his wife Kathey have two great kids, Brett 17 and Robyn 12. |
