Kim Wear (otherwise known as Stella) a local Sertoman was our speaker.  She represented the Susan B. Komen Foundation and gave us information about the Race for Cure which will be held in Brainerd on July 1st.  Brainerd is a brand-new affiliate of this international organization that has 35,000 members and 112 groups like ours.  Their mission is to find a cure for breast cancer by funding research, screening, education and treatment.  By 1998 they had raised $210 million.  Money raised in the local race which may attract as many as 1,000 contestants (business can help with sponsorships, donations and gifts in kind) basically stay in the area with only 25% going for national efforts.  Bonnie Cumberland is the honorary chair of the event which will require 150 volunteers on race day.  If you are interested in working with the group, meet at the Brainerd Library at from 5:30-6:30 on January 25th or call Kim.
Kim (Stella) WearKim (Stella) Wear gave a short but very well-prepared speech which informed the group about the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure.  This 36 year old woman died of breast cancer and the foundation founded by her sister in her honor has grown so much that they are not accepting any new affiliates until they "get caught up".

Jon Haapojoki memorial got two mentions at the meeting. The Morning Club wants our help with the Lift A Thon and will donate proceeds to the memorial fund. We are leaving Jon's name in the Pot'O'Gold and if it is drawn, will give the money to Camp Sertoma.
