Minnesota Military Family Assistance Centers
Tad Hoskins invited Yvonne Zappa from the Fort Ripley Office Minnesota Military Family Assostance Center to this meeting since the Rookies are trying to raise money for this cause with their Rookie Party. The Party will be held at the Lodge on February 21st and the Rookies announced that people wanting to stay can get a fantastic deal on rooms. Yvonne shared some examples of how her group deals with families from all military branches who need help. A Brainerd soldier developed a brain tumor after he returned from deployment and couldn't work. The family had no income. Her office paid their house payments, helped them with groceries and made sure their Christmas was nice.Another returning soldier was dealing with a congenital brain disease that manifested itself in both him and his children. The family needed a lot of help with transportation costs and medical assistance. The office does small things like fixing roofs, helping with furnace problems, providing rides and gas money. There are things we can do--find a veteran in your neighborhood, thank them for serving, and asking if there is anything you can do to help. Even child care is sometimes a big expense. Yvonne averages 30-40 phone calls per day.

Brainerd YMCA Update
Randy Klinger gave us an update on how things are going at the YMCA. "First of all, congratualtions on another successful Winter Wonderland." Randy remarked. He continued, "You do a lot of great things for the community and you do a lot of great things for the "Y". Randy came today to talk about the initiative to promote membership among people who cannot afford full memberships. The "Y" is faced with two compelling mission based reasons to continue to engage in the health and wellness of the area. He discussed the economy and the rise in obesity. Direct and indirect costs related to this problem was estimated at $117 billion dollars in 2002. Minnesota could be paying 900 billion dollars more in health care costs because of this problem in the near future. "Today's children will live sicker and die sooner than their parents for the first time in history," was a quote Randy presented from a longevity expert. Sixty-five percent of people are health seekers--they need to be connected and reinforced in their quest for fitness and health. Heart disease and diabetes in young children is on the rise. It takes a minimum of three months for a body to adapt to a new lifestyle. You cannot get immediate results. The number one reason people give at the "Y" is lack of time.Put yourself in the calendar first--make the time to keep yourself healthy. The second reason is financial. The "Y" has a unique ability to touch people at all financial levels. He is promoting the Y Partners and the reduced and free membership program. It is based on annual household income and the number of people in the household. Membership is done in three month increments. Programs that they do not charge for include free swim lessons for kids, free membership to Port, free memberships to Women's Shelter, New Pathways and Kinship Partners, and deployed military personnel. The "Y" Partners program provides part of the funding; the Charity Ball (every May), and grants the rest. Their programs cover all areas and all ages. levels. A new activity for 5-6 is the Guitar Hero Contest which is partly funded by a grant to buy the equipment. Financially, the Y is solvent even though memberships are down. They are relying more on support from the community. "Be kinder than necessary to all you come across for they may be fighting some kind of battle and/or they have a story to tell." was another of Randy's quotes from Mother Teresa. Membership is $38 per month and you get a $20 credit from your insurance company if you can make 12 sessions per month.

Tom Rosenberger's Haiti Report
The Mission in Haiti has been working for eight years. Tom thanked everyone for their continued support of this project. He reflected on his experience on his 7th trip, "This was the most profound trip even though every trip has been wonderful." Father Glen serves 15,000 poor people. The food is meager and the Mission does not have funds to add to this. Tom reiterated the need for $30 a month sponsorships. Jesus and his command to feed the hungry took on a new meaning for Tom. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

Kari Satre has been doing a great job of taking interesting pictures that spice up our meeting notes. Our lovely stand-in President LoAnn had her portrail taken. The two sergeants got caught lookinbg likeMutt and Jeff. Karla Nelson and Brian Jelinski were suitably yucked out by Bonnie Cumberland's latest table decorations (her busy bees ended up yucky flies). That is also what is puzzling our chairman of the board.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Do not hesitate to call Steve since he is great at telling you exactly what they have that will make your project easy and successful. People rave about their service

"Dear BGR,
This is the best rental house (in the area). The big national companies have come & gone, but BGR is always there, priced right - Johnny -on-the-spot. More importantly EVERY person there is friendly & fun to work with!"

Rumor Corner
  • Dick Stoltman returned from his cruise looking mighty tan. He also got in serious trouble with Sergeant Brian who was having trouble being really creative so he decided it was Pick on Dick Day. Brian dressed up today in his brand new Christmas sweater for Dick Stoltman who wore his risqué souvenir t-shirt from his wife and his cruise
  • Our lady speaker came early and kibitzed with the Dog Pound. She was invited by Tad Hoskins who didn't come early so the guys welcomed her and got her an application to join. Rumor has it the Dog Pound is going to quit investing in blue tickets and spend all their money where it counts--the Lotto.
  • Brian B and Pam S didn't have to go without their beets today. Pam got her photo taken with her new toy and Tad.
  • Why didn't Anita's boss want to sit with her today? Inquiring minds want to know.
  • Schizophrenic retired education Bonnie Cumberland AKA Dave Pundt got the biggest laugh at intros.
  • Art Becker listed all the jobs he is retired from- wow!
  • Nanci Williams is hiring John Raboin to sue Art Becker and the Dog Pound for getting clunked by the bucket while Art was collecting quarters.
  • Nanci Hallam got fined for drunken customers in the police blotter looking for Super 8
  • Ole and Paul had to pay $2 because they were too open about their sex lives.
  • Allen Hall had to pay $2 because the Prez insisted.
