Joe
Rubado is from the PORT group home. He has worked
with the program for 12 years off and on. This is an
non profit organization that works with placement
boys and girls age 10-18 who are either from social
services or probation. Joe complimented the
Sertomans on their impact on the Community and
thanked us for our support of the PORT program. It
currently involves 3 houses which are in transit.
When it started it was a state wide program for
adults. The girl's program is currently being
separated into two locations. A typical stay used to
be 6-9 months. A budget cut meant that the average
stay is now down to 4-6 months. The program has to
be more intense and focused on the critical areas.
Crow Wing County is not the biggest customer--this
is a statewide program. Local kids are more likely
to run away, so other solutions are often considered
Placement occurs because of mental health issues.
Some of them do have criminal issues also. Emotional
support and behavior modification are the goals for
treatment. Volunteer placement does occur
occasionally. Otherwise the court orders placement
or child protection is the instigating factor.
Therapeutic foster homes are the only competing
programs in Brainerd. They do use community services
and the community is a huge factor in the
continuance of the program. Case management
supervisors have college degrees. Schooling for
participants is done through Alternative Education,
a visiting teacher and mainstreaming where possible.
Thanks Joe for visiting with us and answering so
many questions. Thanks to Bonnie Cumberland for her
assistance with attendance and Kari Sartre for
taking photos. |

Bob
Morey has been in the Brainerd area for the past seventeen
years. He reiterated that he is not related to the "famous
Moreys" , Nancy and he have been married for 23 years. She works
in Pequot Lakes. They have two children, a college freshman and
daughter who is a high school junior. His hobbies include being
avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, skier, and snowmobiler. Bob
claims he can beat Korte any time at golf. The family ski trips
have been an absolute blast since his son has gotten into
competitive skiing. Currently he is a realtor who got into the
market when it was really hot this July (we think he was
referring to the weather). It has been a challenge, but he likes
it since it is much more flexible than his previous job with
WalMart. He worked 24 years with that company as District
Manager which involved a lot of travel and he is currently
enjoying the idea of being in one place. His most embarrassing
moment involved a trip to the Dominican Republic where he and a
group of friends crashed into a swimming area on a Catamaran. He
actually hid in the bottom of the boat because he didn't claim
to be a sailor. The rest of the trip involved quite a bit of
event recognition from all the folks at the resort --aren't you
one of the guys etc. Bob joined Sertoma to get more involved in
the community and because he knew many people already in Sertoma.
The first few meetings were fun, but he was truly amazed at how
many people showed their concern for the community through
Sertoma volunteer activities. This attitude made him very glad
he has joined. Hearing and Vision and Winter Wonderland are his
activities as well as being involved with the Rookie Party
planning--thanks Anita Traveca for bringing Bob to our club. |

- Just Regular Rumors
-
We
played Beverly Hills Trivia with Brian. The jury table got
stumped. Granny's first name is Daisy. The harem table knew that
Jethrine is Jethro's sister (Beth knew and then she got accused
of being the other sister). Clampett's have 50 million in the
bank. The grocery table lost out on that one. The good table got
the ape question thanks to Pam who claimed she DID not watch the
show this morning. The real estate table didn't know that
Jethro's mom was named Pearl. The Dog Pound wanted Beverly Hills
90210 questions. However they knew that the Clampett's had a
bloodhound.
- John Raboin tried to convince us he was Vern today.
- Karen Owen is now Pete's sponsor--some guy he works with has
been slacking
- Charlie Bartels Natural Refrigeration Companyis in
competition with Jeff Fitch Old Man Winter (Mid State
REfrigeration).
- Pete and Ted finally had their Sertoma reunion They both
used to work at C & L years ago.
- Mark Korte believes that our SOD had a year off because he
couldn't pass his Real Estate license test (totally untrue
according to Bob)
- Lori Rubin has a new family member. If you look closely you
can see Bill Goers and his new Mom. For the rest of the story,
see Bill or Lori.
