Jim
Whistler who is a Board Certified Hearing technician working
with customers at Miracle Ear, spoke to our group today
about loss of hearing. He has spent fourteen years helping
people with hearing loss and had much information to share
with us. His interest stems from his family experience which
includes a younger brother who is one of the 4% of the
population who has hearing loss from birth. Although he is
not a doctor, he is well trained in administering hearing
tests and is very quick to recommend consulting a physician
first. The advances in technology have made the process
easier and many new hearing aides are available in prices
ranging from $495 to $7,000. His company offers free hearing
aides to qualified children ages 1-16. Jim encouraged
everyone to spread the word about this program. He also gave
us 40 old hearing aides and explained how Sertoma collects
them and has a clearing house to get credit towards new
devices to be donated to needy individuals. He then gave us
some scary statistics and recommended that we all guard
ourselves from loud noises. Jim was especially concerned
since most young people today have already been exposed to
too much noise and may be hearing less than their parents
already. |

A very successful rookie team was
congratulated and thanked at today's meeting. Their
worthy cause which will receive support because of
their efforts is the Companion Dog Program. Those
unfamiliar with this effort cannot realize what a
huge impact these animals have on the elderly and
other confined to hospital areas. Each one has to be
specially trained and licensed before they become
regular heart warming visitors to shut-ins. More
details will follow. Watch the photo album page for
the pictures which will be posted soon. Special
thanks goes to Chairman Anna Gorecke who not only
has coordinated the Rookie Party but currently is
leading the pack in bringing in new members. Keep up
the good work Anna!!! |

Great in 08 made a presentation today. Both
Rory and Joe urged us to attend the appetizer and
social hour before their dinner meeting at the
Chapparal on Friday, February 8th. The delegates to
the regional meeting will be attending a conference
to finalize plans for the Regional Convention which
will be held at Madden's in May. It is time for all
of us to start making plans to attend the Convention
since we are already registered and have paid the
costs through our dues the past two years. If you
plan on attending Friday and did not sign up, please
call Joe Schulte today. Companies should consider
sponsoring a team for the Thursday benefit for the
Camp Sertoma Happajoki Foundation. |

Pipe and Drape season is coming up quickly.
Mark Korte asked us to clear our calendars, plan on
signing up, and think about becoming a co-captain
for one of the major shows. As always--we need each
and every one of you to make this work. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

One of our new Good Enthusiastic Members who is well on her way to
earning that GEM award is Shayna McCulloch. Shayna is a multi
talented member who currently is a marketing cirector and real
estate closer at Legacy Title and Abstract which is located
across from the YMCA. The company has 5 employees and does
sales, refinances, travel closings, 1031 exchanges, new
construction, and multi county registrations. She started in
July after spending a year teaching 8th grade English at
Forestview. Shayna is a local girl who graduated and headed for
St. Cloud State. She participated in diving and gymnastics. She
believes in working for a cause that promotes helping others in
need and being active in the community. She joined in October as
a protege of Anna's and she is very involved in many outside
activities including the Chamber, BLADC, Lakes Area Young
Professionals and many more. Shayna is also a familiar face from
Ernie's on Gull where her most embarrassing moment involved
spilling a 5 gallon bucket of sticky pink Margarita mix all over
everyone at the bar on a hot sticky day. |

We continue to pray for the recovery of Lucy Franz who is back in
the hospital with complications. We received many thank you's
today. The Salvation Army and the Minnesota Interpreters for the
Deaf thanked us for cash donations to their program. One very
grateful family has a handicap van for their foster child with
special needs with some help from our organization. Max Witte
who is in the second grade and was the winner of the Ipod from
the design contest wrote, "Dear Sertoma Club, Thank you for the
I-pod that I won at Lake Region Christian School. I have never
even seen an I-Pod. My Dad is going to teach me how to use it.
Max White" We also received a thank you from Linda Beebe who
loved the lights and appreciated her $50 gift certificate from
Sears. |

Winter Wonderland Spotlight Some very special companies were
willing to become serious sponsors of the Winter Wonderland
Project. The five star companies included: Anderson Brothers,
Brainerd Dispatch, Crow Wing Power, The Greater Lakes
Association of Realtors, Lakes Printing, Brainerd General
Rental/Mid State Refrigeration, and St. Joseph's Medical Center.
Their three year high end commitment was a major step in the
decision to proceed with the project.
Pam Bye and The Chapparal continue to host Sertoma events
including the upcoming important delegate meeting for Great in
08, the new member induction, and the Board Meetings every
month. Thanks to Timber Mist and The Chapparal for their
continued support of Sertoma. |

Again splendid party rookies--however inquiring minds want to
know which rookie spent the night at Bada Bings (she claims by
herself).
-
Happy Birthday newly inducted succesful member of the Rookie
Party Committee Jenny Vesel.
-
Mary Marana made some huge stretches again today to fine
people--Mary Kolkind had to pay for Kenmore dryers eating her
socks, Jeff Fitch and Nanci Williams got hooked for some knife
fantasy or fetish or some f word, and Jeff Marchand moved close
enough to the podium to be a presidential wannabee.
-
Pam Bye was gonna have to pay a hockey fine today but Mary
couldn't find her so Mark Korte paid for her.
-
I don't know what kind of hold Kathi Nagorski has over Mary but
she is the only rookie who didn't get fined today.
-
Tom Krekow was accused of being pretty in pink (his wife's pink
sweater?)
-
Wearing a white shirt got you into serious trouble today, being
a banker or financial officer was a no-no (again the exception
was Reed Campbell and inquiring minds still want to know), and
flashing (ask Bob Nibbe or Karen Owen for more details).
