Brian
Skogen brought Ron Stolski from Brainerd High School to
Sertoma today to help him make a presentation about efforts
being spearheaded by a group called Warrior Way Inc. They
are focusing on the decisions that had to made to cut
activities because of the failed referendum. Brian, as a
Sertoman, encouraged our group to become part of the effort
to save many activities in our schools that range from
athletic programs to music, plays, and FFA. To quote from
their brochure, "We are a community group that believes that
academics should come first. However, we also believe there
are many benefits for all of us in providing opportunities
for our students in activities and sports outside the
classroom." In order to establish a viable non-profit group
that will provide grants to students to pay the additional
fees that will be required for activities, Warrior Way has
to generate over $200,000 by the first of April. Fees are
scheduled to go from $50 to about $360 next year. Brian has
Warrior Way packets and the information is also available on
the school web site. Ron Stolski who is passionate about
programs and the Brainerd School system presented an
inspirational talk about the importance of school
activities. For thirty-five years he has been a member of
the Brainerd community and he remarked, "The heartbeat of a
community is the school district." He mentioned how proud
he was to be associated with a school that ranked in the top
5% in the nation on AP tests. This is just one of the ways
that Brainerd has been a flagship in starting new programs
in Central Lakes to benefit students. In his words, "They
have created and maintained an environment that people want
to be a part of." He encouraged us to become part of the
solution and said, "You make a life by what you give." Mr.
Stolski asked everyone to consider exactly what they will
settle for in the long run. Brian and Ron will continue to
meet with civic groups in an effort to make the Warrior Way
viable by the deadline set by the school district. Sertomans
as a group, as members of the community and as business
people are being asked to support their efforts. Ron was
very complimentary about his early membership in Sertoma.
He joined because it was the most positive uplifting group
in the community and it continues that tradition today. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
Brian
Skogen took advantage of the fact that he was part of the
program today to segue into a Sertoman of the Day presentation.
He and his wife Geri have one son who is currently a ninth
grader. Brian joined Sertoma in 1988 and Rick Besmehn was his
sponsor. Some of his many activities included being club
president when the last regional convention was held in
Brainerd. Over the years he has captained a pipe and drape
crew, chaired the sponsorship committee, worked at Winter
Wonderland and helped out with the Service to Mankind and
Sertoman of the Year committees. His favorite "F" word is fun
and likes boating, golf, and pheasant hunting. At the age of 40
he started learning about the fact that gravity never sleeps
when he took up downhill skiing. He recommends the Michigan
Peninsula highly!!. He is a partner in Silver Star Industries
and his official title is President and CEO. The company
manufactures livestock equipment which is distributed throughout
the upper northwestern United States. They run a retail and
distribution bujsiness known as RADCO which sells aftermarket
truck accessories. He will soon celebrate his 20 year
anniversary with the company. He joined Sertoma to help him
promote one of his "core" values--giving back to the community
and Brian is proud to be a Sertoman. His most embarrassing
moment involved getting the name of the "Purple Pill" confused
with something called Levitra--enough said. |

Rumor Corner
|
-
Sheriff
Dahl is well known all over the country-Mary brought back rumors
of his fame from Florida.
- Dale Bolt is advertising for a roommate for the
convention-applicants must submit a picture.
- Happy Belated Birthday Karen Munsterteiger.
- Welcome back Joyce Seymour.
- Les Franz and Lucy have mastered the art of economy and
Valentines Day. It seems they go to Hallmark, pick out a card
for each other. Stand there, read it and put it back on the
shelf!!
- Ted Anderson from C & L needs to invest in some white shoe
polish (He can quick touch up his hair to match the rest of the
dog pound and wash it out in the men's room)
- Speaking of the dog pound, they were practicing to be
cartoon characters today--some funny voices there fellows.
- Congratulations Uncle Art, he finally joined the ranks of
professional fishermen. He can call himself whatever he likes
now that he is retired.
- Kari Barnes could definitely use a little of Ted's shoe
polish if she continues to stand in for Jeff Olson. She claims
to be much better looking anyway.
