Sertoma at the Regional Convention. A few other topics of
discussion included speakers for the meetings, new pipe and
drape purchases and the recent Regional Meeting.
Special Program
Today
was a day to recognize outstanding contributions to Sertoma.
Julia started in a small way by inviting Joe and Stephanie
Anderson (son and daughter of Joyce and Tom) to the meeting
in recognition of all their hard work helping out at Winter
Wonderland.
Brian Skogen then announced the 2007 Sertoman of the Year,
Steve Mau. Congratulations to Steve for his outstanding work
in Sertoma.
Mike Boen then announced that the Sertoman of the Year
Committee has decided that our club needs to recognize more
than just one outstanding member a year. To augment the
Sertoman of the Year Program and in honor of Jon Haapajoki's
theme as International President, Sertoma Works began at
this meeting. Six people were selected to receive the award
and get their names inscribed on the permanent plaque. They
included: Joyce Anderson, Pam Sachs, Dave Clausen, Joe
Schulte, Lori Rubin, and Kari Barnes. To read their

Sertoman
of the Year 2007 - Steve Mau
Steve Mau Bio as presented by Brian Skogen
Brainerd Area Noon Club
Service to Mankind – SERTOMA – is a noble and
self-less cause. The 2007 recipient of the Brainerd
Area Noon Sertoma Club is a reflection of this
description. Our Sertoman of the Year sets the bar
high for involvement in community. Our Sertoman of
the Year demonstrates that Sertoma is not a club,
Sertoma is not an activity, Sertoma is a Lifestyle!
Our Sertoman of the Year is a visible and dynamic
force in a broad range of volunteer activities
including: Community / Faith / Commercial / Family /
Civic arenas.
Community: Host of a public access television
program designed to inform the Brainerd Lakes
viewers of upcoming events and happenings in our
area.
Faith: Active member of his church. Currently
is the Vice-President Chair for Lord of Life
Lutheran Church. Chairs the “Building on Blessings”
committee for Lord of Life Church and for the past 5
years has lead the “Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study”
group for the church. He has also served the youth
of his congregation as a confirmation mentor.
Commercial: Co-organizer of the first BNI
(Business Network International) group in the
Brainerd Lakes Area. BNI is a networking –
information exchange group intended to foster
communication and relationship building for area
business people.
Active in the Mid Minnesota Builders Association.
Small business owner. With his wife our Sertoman of
the Year owns and operates an established reputable
rental business. Recently they acquired the assets
of a local competitor merging the two businesses.
Family:
Our Sertoman of the Year demonstrates the value of
family life through active participation with his
family in a variety of activities. His marriage with
Maureen of 15 years has been blessed with 3
children Austin (11)Annika (10) and Ryan (6). Serving
4 years as an assistant den leader in Cub Scouts as a
football and baseball coach and as Daddy Warbucks in
a dramatic role our Sertoman of the Year “walks the
talk” when it comes to being involved with his
children. Family activities are a reflection of
family values to our Sertoman of the Year in their
spare time this family can be found in the hot
tubboating skiing,hunting, fishing, snowmobiling or
maybe just playing a board game!
Civic: Co-Chair of the Brainerd Area Sertoma
Winter Wonderland a community holiday light display.
This project has been 3 years and 300 meetings in
the making. Winter Wonderland had a profound affect
upon our community attracting 9000 cars
approximately 36000 visitors. An immense amount of
energy and focus by our Sertoman of the Year
inspired club and community members to get involved.
To date over 6500 volunteer hours have been logged
in preparation,installation,operation, and take
down. Sertoma’s Winter Wonderland will spread the
word about Sertoma as well as return 10’s of
thousand of dollars back to the community for
sponsorship causes. Our Sertoman of the year spent
well over 40 evenings in OctoberNovember and
December providing vision and direction for Winter
Wonderland.
An active member of Sertoma since joining in 2002 he
quickly joined the ranks of leadership serving as
3rd Vice President in 2003. Currently he is Chairman
of the Board for our Club.
Our Sertoman of the Year demonstrates by example
that Service to Mankind is a Lifestyle, it is a core
value and there is balance in
Community/Faith/Commercial/Family
and Civic involvement. Congratulations Steve Mau as
the recipient of the 2007 Brainerd Area Noon Sertoma
Club’s “Sertoman of the Year”. |

Nominations as presented at the meeting:
Joyce
Anderson has been a member since November1996. She
previously has been Club Treasurer during which time she set
up the club record keeping on Quick Books. Joyce was a key
person in our inaugural year of Winter Wonderland. She spent
many many evening hours at the Arboretum involved with Winter
Wonderland. Her next commitment to the Brainerd Noon Sertoma
Club is her involvement with the 2008 Regional Convention to
be held at Madden's in May
Pam Sachs has been a member since August1999. Pam has
been our "e-mail guru" who is responsible for our
newsletter, club events and information sent to members. She
keeps our personal information current within the
membership. She is a very important asset to our club and
does much the same for Camp Confidence.
Dave Clausen has been past vice president and
president. He attended National and Regional
Conventions worked at Winter Wonderland helped with Pipe and
Drape and been an enthusiastic member since May of 2000. He
has contributed much to the Club and especially appreciated
for his contagious humor and wit.
Joe Schulte rejoined Sertoma in April of 2002. Joe's
many duties included program chairperson Gossamer Ceiling
organizer and first chair starting a new club in Bemidji and
scheduling for the Winter Wonderland. He is currently the
co-chair for the Regional convention to be held at Madden's
in 2008.
Lori Rubin also rejoined Sertoma in May of 2005. Lori
has energy and she has been involved in fund raising. She
chaired a successful rookie party that also involved getting
Scott Hanson to continue to raise money for Sertoma. She was
one of the "rookies" who agreed to take over the Gossamer
Ceiling project and make it a rookie activity. She was
chairperson of the Winter Wonderland Sponsorship Committee
and was very successful in obtaining sponsorships.
Kari Barnes joined in May of 2005. Kari is one of our
newer members but this has not stopped her from getting
involved. She has worked very hard on our main fund
raiser-Pipe and Drape. This program is now expanding and she
has spent hours scheduling and getting volunteers for
events. Kari continues to work on reorganizing and
revitalizing this project. She is also very active in the
BNI organization within the community. |
