Sertoma
had two presentations today. The first was a short blurb
from Craig Dunmire of Ernies on Gull. Not only did Craig
re-join Sertoma today but he also encouraged everyone to
support the upcoming Frozen Fore event on March 1 & 2nd. If
you did not receive the Frozen Fore newsletter today,
information is online at
http://www.gulllakefrozenfore.com.
The Gull Lake Frozen Fore is a winter fest held at area
resorts and restaurants on Gull Lake. At each of the 9
locations (Bar Harbor, Cragun’s, Ernie’s on Gull, Grand View
Lodge, Kelly’s, Matty’s, Quarterdeck, Zorbaz on Gull and
Hole-in-the-Day Bay)a fun outdoor "golfing" hole as well as
other games provide participants with an opportunity to
enjoy Minnesota at its finest. Tennis ball and clubs
provided, no golf skills are required and there are
thousands of prizes. The Ninth Hole is at Hole in the Day
and includes a food fest. The proceeds benefit Confidence
Learning Center, Lightning Hockey and Ski Gull. The event
includes shuttle buses between locations and to return
participants to their point of origin or even provide them
with transportation home if they live in the nearby
vicinity.
Many
of us learned a great deal from today's other informative
presentation from Steve Northway of Northway Construction
Service. Steve's presentation clarified the "green" movement
in the construction industry. Steve and Sertoma have a few
things in common. Our next president, Mark Korte, was
interviewed, hired, and steered in the direction of joining
Sertoma by Steve when he was part of Nor-Son. Steve actually
moved to Brainerd in 1978 when the fledgling Sertoma group
was just getting started. The Green Building Movement is
gaining momentum through a program called LEED. Northway
Construction actually built the first LEED new construction
and completed the first remodel in the state. This movement
is not about products, its about details. Steve remarked,
"High performance building better represent what the
building industry is trying to accomplish." This is geared
toward lowering heating and cooling costs for everyone to
ultimately have a positive affect on global warming. Areas
he covered included: site planning and layout, materials,
enhanced durability (water management and flashing), tight
construction with proper moisture control, improved
insulation, high performance windows, tight ducts, efficient
water heating, efficient lighting, and safe and healthy air
quality control. Eighty five percent of the 13,000 enrolled
homeowners are more satisfied with their high performance
building. Although initial costs are higher (around $8,000)
this is usually offset by energy savings over the long run.
He invited us to learn more about this at the Build Smart
Summit which will be held on Wednesday April 30th and
Thusday May 1st at Maddens. More details will be
forthcoming. |

Flag Project--Beth Burnard is looking for someone to
step up and get involved in heading up the flag
project with her. Flags are put up 6 days and
responsibilities include helping to line up workers
and sell spots. Please let Beth or Julia know if you
would be willing to chair this great fundraiser. |
|
Jim Hanson sent around a talent search sheet today.
He announced the end of an era. The Swinging Sertomans were born 20 years ago when Brainerd
hosted the Regional Convention for the first time.
The guys have decided to retire after performing at
Great in 08. Jim would like to see our musical group
tradition continue in some form or another so is
setting the ground work for forming a new ensemble. |
|
Pipe and Drape Take Down at Cragun's on Sunday from
8 to 9 a.m. As was mentioned in last week's
announcement, the busy season is upon us. Consider
volunteering to chair this activity for a month or
to be responsible for one of the large shows. Talk
to Kari Barnes or Mark Korte. |
|
The agenda for the Regional was finalized last
Friday. It will be posted to the Great in 08
Website. Thanks to everyone who showed up to help
welcome the regional convention delegates. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

Keep Tami Webb's daughter in your prayers as she recovers from
major surgery. We receive two thank you letters this week. One
was from the Brainerd Lakes Area Coalition thanking us for our
monetary contribution which will be used for their programs.
Kelsey Beutz wrote, "Thank you for the scholarship. It will help
me pay for my books and tuition next fall. I appreciate the
award and will use it wisely." Kelsey is planning to move on to
St. Cloud after CLC and would like to work in elementary
education. |

Business Notes |
|
Sertoma welcomes Ernies and Craig Dunmire back to the club. Craig
would like to encourage you all to buy your Frozen Fore tickets
at Ernies where that purchase puts you in the drawing for the
weekend of fish house rental plus dinner for four. New to the
event this year are a scavenger hunt and a medallion hunt. They
are still looking for entries for the food fest and sponsors for
the buses.
Hawthorn Inn and Suites was highly complimented by the Regional
delegates who stayed there this past weekend. Thanks Kris
Hoheisel and your staff.
Lutheran Social Service's has sent Sandy Kleist to Sertoma as
their representative for several years. Sandy will now hand that
responsibility on to Becky Pakarinen who visited with her last
week. Welcome Becky.
Roses are $18.88 at Cub Foods for Valentine's. The Chapparal is
runniing Sweetheart Specials for the occasion.
Have fun at the Nisswa Jubilee this weekend!!
Winter Wonderland Sponsors Four star sponsors included: CTC,
Ascensus, Brainerd General Rental and Mini Storage, Brainerd
Jaycees, Dondelingers, Hunt Utilities Group, Lakewood Bank,

Rumor Corner
|
-
Welcome back Jim Hanson, Randy Phillips and Craig Dunmire.
-
Happy grandmother to be Jules and Happy Grandmother for the 8th
time Kathy Williams.
-
Poor Sheriff Dahl is afraid to sit by anyone--the sergeant keep
fining the whole table. This was some hockey trumped up charge.
And Pam didn't even read him his rights. He was trying to win
Friends today by volunteering to help Brian Lehman find his
"stolen" pin. The sergeants have confiscated pins from those who
have been storing them on their badges.
-
Retired Mayors do sell pins out of the back of their cars but
they cost $7 instead of a $2 fine.
-
Julia was glad to hear that Rory was not having a sex change
operation even though she has begun referring to him as "her".
-
A standing ovation was given to Jim Hanson as the representative
of the Swinging Sertomans who are retiring after 20 years of
raising money for the club by sharing their talents. The quarter
of a million dollars raised by their efforts represents a lot of
man hours by these wonderful people. Their laughter and
entertainment will be sorely missed.
-
Ted Anderson already got in trouble for slippery Bud
bottles--too bad one of the sergeants owns a bar.
-
Ron Morris can snore through a Sertoma presentation according to
rumors--inquiring minds want to know how exciting things have to
be to keep him awake.
-
Curling won one and lost one this last weekend.
