Program
Bliss was the topic of the day today at Sertoma, but it had little to do with Valentine's Day. Actually pronounced the same but spelled BLIHS, it stands for the new Brainerd Lakes Integrated Health system as explained by Thomas Prusak. President and CEO of the new parent organization, and Dr. David Boran, Chief Medical Officer, who visited Sertoma today. Melody Banks who is community relations coordinator for St. Joseph's introduced the speakers and assisted with the presentation. She also postponed her Sertoman of the Day speech to give them more time. The 162 bed primary and secondary care hospital joined forces with Brainerd Medical Center, a 50 physician multi specialty group practice. This is not a merger but a strategy to align economics and to promote health care development in the area which was being stifled by the two separate organizations. The hospital will retain its association with the Catholic Church through this restructuring which has been a block to any such efforts in the past. Our area is growing rapidly with the age level of most new residents in the retiree bracket so the need for services is also growing. Mr. Prusak explained from the patient's point of view we will have an expanded range of services especially in cardiology. The goal is to acquire at least 50 more doctors and create a new Baxter Medical development on the property which the hospital acquired several years ago adjacent to the new WalMart area. The third and final goal is to continue to develop the Community Health Record. Brainerd Medical Center is no longer a physician owned for profit organization. The overall goal which this integration hopes to achieve is a much higher quality of care in the local area.
Thanks Joyce Frid for taking notes.
