Crow
Wing County Commissioner Terry Sluss and Sheriff Eric Klang
visited Sertoma today to speak to us on the ever present concern
about methamphetamines. Terry and Eric did some stand up comedy
and then got down to talking about this serious problem. The
good news is that the innovative program to get the ingredients
off the shelf and behind the counters has reduced meth labs 20%.
Commissioner Sluss remarked, “We, as a community, have taken a
leadership role on the state level.” He then went on to explain
that the problem is now the addiction itself. Sheriff Klang added,
“It is an epidemic, but we have gotten after it much sooner than
other areas.”
They then went on to explain the new focus which will begin in
May of this year. Studies have shown that highly supervised and
very structured programs called Drug Courts work in reducing the
recidivism of addicts from 90 to 35 %. This program focuses on
those person who are committing crimes because they are addicted
and gets them back into society. They spend 18 months in this
program which involves weekly drug tests and meetings with the
judge as well as strict probationary supervision. Over 2.3 million
dollars of the Crow Wing County budget is dedicated to prosecution
and enforcement costs for dealing with the drug program and this
could end up saving considerable money in the long run.
On the law enforcement side of the picture, they are currently
dealing with the problem of Mexican imports of the drugs since
they no longer can be manufactured locally due to the scarcity of
raw materials. |
