Program
Brainerd Sertoma SpeakersMilo Johnson arranged for today’s excellent presentation by the “Fast Cops”. As Milo explained, “If you get the kids out on the drag strips, they will drive safer on the streets”. This theme was reiterated by Minnesota State Trooper Larry White who was the emcee of the program. He was joined by Mille Lacs Tribal Conservation Officers Mike Taylor and Shaun White, as well as EMT Don Hannahs (left to right in photo). Larry added to Milo’s idea when he explained, “Kids and cars are a part of our American culture and we are using the race car as a tool to gather the interest of the kids.” The car the police drive is a 93 Mustang that has been featured in the World of Wheels, Car Craft, and the State Patrol Trooper Magazine along with the details of this innovative program. The organization became operational in February of 2003, but their first season of Wednesday activities for teens was very successful. By the end of the season, they were seeing as many as 200 cars per session. A Crosby student is currently the champion in the school challenges and a girl from Pequot Lakes went on to compete in the national activity. A major portion of Fast Cops is education—this group includes as part of its all-vFast Cop Badgeolunteer activities many visits to area schools where they have a graphic but effective presentation to impress the young people. Sixty-four percent of fatalities occur in the 16-26 age groups. The thrill of being able to race a cop legally transfers a much keener awareness of vehicle limits to the younger driver without the danger. It also opens lines of communication with the cops that are not possible in more formal situations. The group is looking for financial support to continue these worthwhile activities. To make a contribution or to get more information email fast_cop@hotmail.com or send it to 20495 Lookout Rd. Ironton, MN 56455.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Darleen KerstingDarleen Kersting of Budget Mortgage was our stand up comedian of the day. She introduced us to her husband Jim by explaining that they met 20 years ago and at that time he was never going to remarry or have any more children. Needless to say Diane’s wit and charm changed all that and they have been married 17 years and have two boys. She admitted to reading and working out as hobbies but then got a chuckle when she said she had to admit that probably dishes and laundry were more realistic ones. She originates from Hill City and graduated from college as a CPA. Her role at Budget ranges from latrine duty to issuing home mortgages including first, second, line of credit and construction loans. They are located in the Westport Center, have one branch with 5 employees, and started business in 1998. Edie Hindman was Darleen’s sponsor and she joined our club to network and to give something back to the community.
Of Note:
Congratulations to Sandy and Eric Bonde—baby is on the way in July.
Ryan BabySpeaking of babies, Deb Ryan shared her hospital photo of Madeline Marcella who as born on February 7th and weighed in at 8 lbs. 2 oz.
Rumors Corner:
  • There are some Sertomans hiding under these good looking girl outfits—male of course. It was all for a good cause.
  • It’s ok in California for Mark Puschinsky to put his arm around Les and tell him he loves him-quote from our favorite sanitary engineer to Sergeant Daughter Lynn. Speaking of Mark, he did announce that he had found a woman in his own defense.
  • John Raboin has a mideast connection?
  • Chuck Bartles announced this as his occupation much to everyone else’s envy—Professionally tired of Political Advertisements.
  • Guess who was embarrassed about wearing a Hawaiian bra at the MBNA meeting even if Verna was the one who won the cute little item.
  • David Pundt again acted as Sergeant and was encouraged by a nameless member of the audience to drink more of the product he sells after repeated advertisements about the CLC play this weekend.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
