Two
very brave young men made this a special meeting for Brainerd
Noon Sertomans. Our speaker, Tom Dollins, was at Bonanza as a
living representative of how important it is to support the
Heart Walk which will take place on Saturday, February 21, 2004
at the Westgate Mall. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. with the
opening ceremony at 8:30 with proceeds going to help fight heart
disease and stroke. Tom is a senior at Remer and was the
recipient of a heart transplant in 2002. Our Sertoman of the
Day, John Linn, announced his new “hobby”, raising funds for
multiple sclerosis—a disease that he recently discovered was a
part of his future when he was diagnosed. Tom was brought to
Sertoma by Mike Boen and introduced by Patty Hartman. Tom’s
enlarged heart was not a result of infection or genetics and
remains unexplained. He waited a year and a half for his
transplant after many visits to Children’s Hospital and finally
some time in Rochester where the transplant took place. His new
heart is expected to last about 10 years; and he is a very
active normal teenager who works several jobs including resort
work and bartending. Tom concluded his presentation with some
memorable quotes. He showed remarkable insight when he said,
“One thing I have learned is that the transplant process is
harder on the family than the recipient.” He also encouraged
everyone in the room to live each day to the fullest and not to
take anything for granted. He is looking for pledges as is the
Woodland Good Samaritan team. If you would like to donate to
Tom’s Heart Walk, see Mike Boen. Since 1924, the American Heart
Association has helped protect people of all ages and
ethnicities from the ravages of heart disease and stroke. These
diseases which are our #1 and #3 killers respectively claim over
930,000 American lives a year. Ninety percent of donations to
the American Heart Association go towards research and
education. The Brainerd Heart Walk started in 1999 raising
$15,508. This year’s goal is $67,000, which is about $11,000
more than was raised last year. |

Sertoman of the Day
|
John
Linn of First Federal Savings Bank was our honored Sertoman of
the Day. His wife Carna was in the audience while John shared
his experiences with us. They met as freshmen in a composition
class at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. He got into the
banking business after a stint as a professional photographer
specializing in outdoor sports. John is very active with a long
list of hobbies including waterskiing, wakeboarding, snow
skiing, snowboarding, white water and sea kayaking, rock
climbing, deer hunting and flying a small plane. His most recent
embarrassing moment was dressing up as a lady for a fund raiser
last week—pictures maybe forthcoming. His current employment is
at First Federal Savings Bank which opened in January and is
located in the Westport Center but also including branches in
Baxter and Cross Lake. Currently they are a loan production
office but will be expanding to a full service bank. His sponsor
was Val Vournier and so far he has just been a part of the
“freeze your butt off” bucket checking crew for the fishing
tournament but is looking forward to working with pipe and
drape. He closed his speech with an announcement about his
multiple sclerosis diagnosis. He shared his first fundraiser
with us and passed around his pledge sheets—see him if you would
like to contribute. |

Rumors Corner: |
- Wilfred Brumley (Randy Phillips) was late to the meeting
today.
- Rory Coit was a little embarrassed when he tried to read his
own ticket off as the “winner”.
- Mary Marana has “the NBC license”—mmm what does that mean?

The following is a little Minnesota humor: |
- If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling
through l8 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that
the food will swim by, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you're proud that your state makes the national news 96
nights each year because International Falls is the coldest spot
in the nation, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you have ever refused to buy something because it's "too
spendy", you might live in Minnesota.
- If you think a basketball team consists of twelve white
boys, you might live in Minnesota.
- If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through
March, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out
of the year, you might live in Minnesota.
- If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't
work there, you might live in Minnesota.
- If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the
middle of his forehead, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you have apologized to a telemarketer, you might live in
Minnesota.
- If you may not have actually eaten it, but you have heard of
Lutefisk, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you
might live in Minnesota.
- If you have either a pet or a child named "Kirby", you might
live in Minnesota.
- If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you
might live in Minnesota.
- If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with
someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you know how to say Wayzata, Mahtomedi, Edina and
Shakopee, you might live in Minnesota.
- If you grew up thinking rice was only for dessert, you might
live in Minnesota.
- If you think that ketchup is a little too spicy, you might
live in Minnesota.
- If every time you see moonlight on a lake, you think of a
dancing bear, and you sing gently, "From the land of sky-blue
waters, .."Hamm's the beer refreshing", you might live.........
in MINNESOTA!

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
