Program
Brainerd Sertoma - Mike HowardMike Howard’s reenactment of Iwo Jima, to quote one of our illustrious sergeants, was the program of the day. Mike struggled to put up his sample flag before the meeting so he could enlighten us on the flag project which is going forward. As he said, “I have a vision and a dream.” His humor included a trip into nostalgia land when Shep’s Bar was a feed store and Ace Hardware was the edge of town. This is the era when major holidays saw Brainerd decorated with patriotic flags from one end to the other. Flags make you feel good so Mike and his crew propose to make us feel good on 6 major holidays-Armed Forces Day, 9/11, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July. With an initial investment of $75 per flag and pole for 300 flags and 6 trailers, we could be showing clear profit in two years. If every Sertoman would volunteer to take one route on one of those 6 holidays, we could cover the 7:00 a.m. Set up and before sunset take down. The flags are 3/5 and the poles are 12 feet and go into a permanently installed base. A question and answer session clarified many of these details. Thanks for continuing your enthusiasm for Sertoma with a new project Mike.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Jason BertramJason Bertram was today’s honored Sertoman. Jason was a very appropriate seasonal choice—he proposed to Jill from Edina at today’s meeting. She hasn’t heard about it yet but it is on the Valentine’s agenda. Jason grew up on Round Lake and attended Brainerd High School where his most embarrassing moment of falling flat on his face during football introductions occurred. At Moorhead College he played football against a budding Viking—TE Jim Kleinsasser. His hobbies include his football fanaticism including fantasy, volunteering with the high school wrestling program, wake boarding and fishing. He works at Northwestern Mutual Financial Networks. His current title of Financial Representative is much less intriguing than the 1995 job he took as “Special Agent”. His job has not changed just his title. Jason works with wealth accumulation, risk management, long term care and all other aspects of financial planning. He joined with the idea of giving back to the community. As a childhood friend of Wade Haapajoki, he already had some idea of what Sertoma means. See Sandra Bonde if you would like to share your story. Excellent presentation Jason!
Of Note:
Our condolences go out to Toni Carlson. She lost her husband in a snowmobile accident.
Rumors Corner:
  • Mike Boen has added K Lakes TV to his already much too long list of media for introductions.
  • Dave Pundt and Kathy Williams can be seen and heard at the Rhythm of the Rails Old Fashioned Radio Hour at 8:00 p.m. this Saturday at the Franklin Auditorium. Tickets are $8 at the door.
  • Dave was our alumni sergeant today—he decided to fine Pam Sachs simply to keep her from sainthood.
  • He also got a taste of Pundt unplugged when Dale Bolt pulled the plug on the microphone when he got too eloquent in his advertising.
  • Mark Puschinsky for this week only has claimed the title of Doctor of Love.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
