Jeanne Weigum, representing the MPAT organization, spoke to us
at length this noon about the efforts being made by her
organization to stop smoking in Minnesota. She took some time to
explain to us about the tobacco settlement that was made because
of a case instituted by then State Attorney General Skip
Humphrey. Her organization is mandated through the courts and is
spending their share of the money for three major purposes. They
are provided a quit line that gives people counseling and help,
doing research to help discover different factors that make
people smokers, and providing public education that will cut
down on smoking in Minnesota. Jeanne's major point was that the
tobacco companies had to pay this large settlement because
hundreds and thousands of people were damaged by their
misleading advertising and their fraudulent attempts to make
people believe that smoking was not harmful. Especially
pernicious were their efforts to target younger children. Their
group is also developing two new programs ‹one that will get
them out into larger workplaces with a target goal of at least
100 businesses and an internet program for cessation that is in
experimental stages right now. A question and answer period
followed the speech. Jeanne gave encouragement to all smokers
when she explained, "A lot of smokers quit, and relapse. You can
learn a better way. Each time a person tries to quit, the better
they get at it! Keep trying! The people who succeed the best are
those who get support from family and friends." |

Sometimes we forget what Sertoma is really all about in the week
to week meetings that provide a lot of time for socializing and
enjoying the speakers. Lori Redmond reminded us today when she
told about how our donation along with the Northern Lakes
club has provided one 10th grade boy in Pequot Lakes with hearing
aides. She introduced herself to him at church and thought she
would have to explain who she was, but he recognized her name and
expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the difference the
hearing aides have made in his life. |

All these people lined up at the front of the room received a pin
for bringing in a new member. Thanks for recruiting and
keep up the good work. If Sam Foss reads this announcement and

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there

Our prayers go out to Bob and Ann Sherman. Bob is in the hospital
after a serious accident. |

Instead of being humorous this week it is an appropriate time to
stop and remember the families of the Shuttle victims and those
who's husbands, brothers, and sons have already been called up to
serve our country. |

Thank you notes from the Junior Achievers (We donated money for
them to attend Exchange City)
Erika said, "We had a blast. I was the fitness trainer at the
Wellness Center. I got to give people checkups."
Dillon was excited about learning how to write checks and
deposit money.
Alyssa was pretty honest‹she thought her day was awesome but as
many people can relate to she also thought "My breaks were the
best part of the day!"
Marlee thought her job as a production designer for the sign
shop prepared her for a job in the real world.
Spencer thought Exchange City was an awesome learning
experience. He especially liked all the cool stuff they bought
during the day.
Cassie enjoyed working in the Nature Shop making postcards and
critters.
Kevin learned that working was not as easy as he thought he
was.
Jacob thought being an accountant was an "easy" job. How about
that Carole Paulson?

Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:
