The Bethany Good Samaritan name is associated with three
different buildings in Brainerd at the present time, the two
nursing homes and something which is called Bethany House. Our
two speakers, Craig Ammermann, administer of the Bethany Good
Samaritan Village and the chaplain Lilia Bear were at Noon
Sertoma to present a project that they feel is very necessary
for our community, especially considering the fact that we will
need 80% more care facilities in the next ten years. The Bethany
House is currently operating and providing a 10 bed
non-traditional facility for early Alzheimer’s patients. Because
it is run with a family atmosphere and built to be more like a
home than an institution, these patients are much more
comfortable. This concept which is the future that the nursing
home profession wishes to move towards will be expanded in the
Brainerd area if they can build Samaritan House which will
provide a 16 bed facility and deal more generally with all kinds
of patients. Samaritan House will not only provide less
stressful living for these patients but will allow the nursing
homes to move toward more private rooms and more common space
for those people that are being se rved in the traditional
atmosphere. Reverend Bear was very inspiring. She began by
saying, “We are all in this together”. She went on to explain
that only 20% of people normally need nursing home care, but we
have all been touched by this experience through family members
and friends. She handed out Treasures, chocolate candies which
everyone enjoyed, to represent the treasures that are the
nursing home patients. If Paul Gropper reads this and calls Pam
at eight two nine seven seven six one before Wednesday, he will
collect his fas money. Their presentation was best summed up by
her closing statement, “We need to provide good housing for our
fragile elderly right here in the Brainerd area.” Both speakers
encouraged us to come and visit the nursing homes and especially
Bethany House to see the difference the home environment makes
for the patients. |

| Announcements |
A special thanks goes to the social committee for its
efforts in producing the family bowling event held at Paul Bunyan
Bowl on Sunday. The facilities were wonderful, the food was good,
and everyone had a good time. It was definitely kid’s week at
Sertoma since they were invited to the opening Sertoma party at
Godfather’s by Julia Sullivan and the crew. If you would like to
see more pictures of the events, click on the link at the bottom
of the page and go to our MSN Photo Albums. Pam apologizes for the
fact that this is the first time you will get to see the Christmas
Party pictures also. |

FAS: Congratulations to Edie Hindman who collected her FAS
money this week. Thanks to all the folks who read the announcement
and called thinking that there weren’t any names (tricky is what
they called me). Pete Mogenson didn’t win. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
|
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |
