Pat Archer spoke to Sertomans today about the Crossing Arts
Alliance. She remarked, “I have been here three different times
and every time the room is more crowded. It is remarkable how
your club continues to grow and do good work.” Her basic theme
was one of grass roots involvement in the arts. She explained
that her group’s ambitions are to “promote and enhance art in
the area as well as to partner with all kinds of groups in that
endeavor.” This includes organizations, individual artists and
schools. Look for them to be involved wherever people are
painting, performing, singing, and being creative in any way.
You might want to check out the Flipside activities for children
from pre-schoolers to high school. The Alliance is fortunate to
be still working on the third year of a three year grant from
the Blandin foundation. Their membership which includes many
individuals and also businesses has grown to a whopping 380
members. She gave us some surprising statistics that showed just
how much the arts impact the economy especially in a tourist
area like Brainerd. She closed with some inspiring remarks from
Evelyn Mathis, the current president that included such ideas as
“the arts tell stories”, “artists inspire spirit” and “art
represents what happens historically”. |

FAS Note Pam announced the new rules for FAS. Currently you
must read your name in the newsletter, call her before the meeting
day and show up at the next meeting to collect your sawbuck. She
has had a terrible tendency to forget to put the names in lately
so the new rule is, “the first person who calls when there aren’t
any names in the newsletter is the winner”. Congratulations to Bob
Joyce who collected the FAS winnings two weeks ago. Sam Foss did
not call. |

Regional Convention Notes: Rory has 8 people signed up for
the train trip to Minot. He also mentioned the reasonable hotel
rates. Some smart guy from Kelly Services got fined because he
said, “Hotels in Minot should be free.” The club will pay $100 of
the $135 registration fee for all who wish to participate. We will
have a hospitality suite since we are bidding to host the 2006
convention. |
Mike Howard is flanked by Brian Kirkpatrick and Rod Converse
representing the Little Moran Club. When the group
disbanded they donated $1,100 to the Camp Sertoma Club and Mike
wished to express the club’s appreciation. |

Diane Rook Johnson is handing out quarterly statements at
the meeting this week and next week. Try to pick yours up to save
the postage. Fas, if Pete Mogenson reads this and calls Pam at

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

Humor Corner |
Our very special guest sometimes goes by the name of Larry Wild
but we prefer him in his guise of Lars Larson from the Larson Slew
Sertoma Club. He presented us with a proclamation, told and Ole
joke, and collected money to help finance the hospitality suite at
the Regional Convention.

Whereas:
The Brainerd Sertoma Club has a long standing history of hosting
Great Plains Regional Conventions which are the standard by which
all other conventions are measured. And Whereas: a successful
bid for the 2006 convention will not only be a great event in
2006, but will also greatly enhance the 2003,2004,and 2005
conventions by virtue of the Brainerd expertise in the hospitality
department
And whereas: the Larson Slew Sertoman have been lobbying to
bring a convention to northern Minnesota, and are kindred spirits
with the Brainerdites, and realistically this is as close to
Larson Slew as the Great Plains will be willing to come,
Therefore, be it resolved, by the power invested in the
Larson’s Slew Sertoma Club, that Larson Slew throws its support to
Brainerd in its bid for the 2006 Great Plains Regional Convention.
Signed: Ole Olson, Sven Svenson, Cousin Gus Gustafson, Doc
Turnquist, Lars Larson, and Lena and Helda Genster. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
