Deb OlanderDeb Olander, speaking as a private citizen, brought her campaign to oppose the proposed Walmart Superstore in Baxter to our noon meeting today. Deb remarked, “I feel strongly about our dollars being spent in our community.” She went on to explain that the Walmart Superstore is a corporate entity and as such is able to drive small locally owned enterprises out of business with what she referred to as “predatory pricing” thus establishing a monopoly. She also felt that it was a governmental issue. Individual governing bodies can make regulations that will affect how their communities grow. One dollar spent in a local community owned business can impact the community in as much as three different ways. That same dollar often goes to corporate headquarters from the super store in less than 48 hours. She also emphasized the fact that it takes 1-3 years for the actual impact in loss of jobs to hit an area after one of these stores is built. Deb has raised her children in this community and feels very strongly about this issue. She would like to preserve the quality of life that is inherent in our Brainerd area. A question and answer period raised some interesting issues. Mike Howard reminded us of how the grocery stores have evolved from the little corner stores that he remembered as a youth that no longer exist. Dave Burggraff brought up an interesting point about how many of us, whether we know it or not, are owners of Walmart through investment accounts and 401K’s. Another interesting point made was Walmart’s poor showing in giving back to the community. As a service club we should know that they return only one half of one percent compared the national average which runs at the one percent mark. Thank you for an interesting speech on a controversial topic Deb.
Announcements
Feb 18th Board Meeting North Winds 7 a.m. Remember all new members are required to attend a board meeting to get their GEM award.
Kari Robinson is not getting much enthusiasm for her bowling expedition. She needs people to sign up and pay their money by the next meeting.
Regional Convention plans are in the works already. Although the actual meeting is months away Rory Coit would like to know how many people are interested in taking advantage of the current low fare offered by AmTrac. The only disadvantage is the early a.m. departure and arrival of the trains from Staples. Fares only last until Saturday. This year’s convention is in Minot N.D.
Camp Sertoma Golf fund raiserSee graphic for details on the Camp Sertoma Golf fund raiser. Dave would also like to know how many people would be interested in making this a weekend event with camping and activities at Little Moran. Overnight accommodations at the hunting lodge would also be available for those who do not like roughing it.

Our club turns 25 this year. Plan on being at the Madden's Town Hall on May 17th, 2003 to celebrate. The planning committee has been formed and is open to suggestions for how to commemorate our anniversary.
FAS: Would have been Joyce Seymour, but she didn’t make the meeting. Thanks for the call Joyce. Chuck Whalen did not call.

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @ 820-5544 if you can't make it.

Ultimate Fishhouse ContestAs head of the sponsorship committee, Lori Redmond smiles as she accepts the check in the amount of $2505 donated to Sertoma through the Ultimate Fishhouse Contest. Thanks Rory for all your hard word on this project. Thanks to Julia Sullivan also for her help with the money and bookkeeping.

Remember Joyce Anderson whose mother is quite ill and Lynn Franz who is having elbow surgery in your prayers this week.
Rumor Corner
  • Want to golf on the ice for a good cause and give our local camper guy a hard time—see you at the Eel Pout Festival this weekend.
  • Joe Brenny had to explain how he let it all hang out on his recent skiing trip.
  • The garbage man had to pay the fine for the pizza lady who is still wearing red—and not because of Valentines day either.
  • And who would like to be known as the Valentine Specialist? (Hint, he just returned to Sertoma and his old job).

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the current photographs or check out the new online directory go to:  http://communities.msn.com/BrainerdNoonSertoma/_whatsnew.msnw
