 Carole Paulsen was at the podium again this week introducing our speaker, Dan Hagsted from the Crisis Line. Dan has been a volunteer with this worthwhile effort since its conception in 1988. His involvement stems from an experience he had while working at the radio station in Bemidji during his college years. A student who had attempted suicide called him and he was involved in the effort to save her life. His remarks about the crisis line were very informative. Stressing the confidentiality and anonymity that is guaranteed to all callers, he explained that most of them just
"needed someone to talk to about a personal problem". Calls range from mothers concerned about their son's drinking problems to seniors who want to know where to get information about help with their medicine or other problems. The majority of the volunteers deal with these kinds of problems and offer two referrals from their catalog of services offered by the governmental and county agencies. Many go for years without ever handling a real
"crisis" situation but providing a much needed service that has dealt with 22,000 calls in the past twelve years. Dan's other job was to encourage us all to participate in their fund
