Program
Smile Again Ministeries was founded by Pat and Judy Misener and is based in Cross Lake, Minnesota.
Judy shared her personal story about losing a child which was the inspiration for establishing their Smile Again Ministeries. Their vision is to help people find hope and peace within their pain. Her rose metaphor brought home the cruelty of the unexpected death of her 7th grade daughter Micky who died of a very unexpected heart failure. White Tail Lodge is part of the program and has been established as a grief center. Sessions will be scheduled from Monday through Saturday with chances for whole families to work through the grieving process. Divorce often follows the death of a child for instance and Pat and Judy would like to give families the opportunity to have the support they need to get through to the other side of grief. "We as a nation, do not grieve well," Pat remarked. This is a different approach than the grieving camp which is held at Confidence Learning Center each spring which focuses on children and adolescents only. A question and answer session concentrated on the issues that men deal with. This is a non profit group that wants to be a resource for Sertoma members. Thanks to Kathy Williams, Kim Ellingson and Bonnie Cumberland for their able assistance with photos and attendance.

Brainerd Noon Sertoma Presents Annual Awards
The Brainerd Noon Sertoma, a very active civic group in the Brainerd area, recently recognized two outstanding individuals who represent the best that the club has to offer. Tad Hoskins, an independent general contractor, received the Rookie of the Year Award. Lori Rubin who is an account executive at Consolidated Telephone Company received the prestigious Sertoman of the Year Award.

The Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club which often holds the title of largest Sertoma Club in the World, gathers its members from all walks of life and all ages. Tad recently moved to the area and his goal as an independent contractor is to help people especially senior citizens have a reliable handyman type of contractor available for those smaller jobs they can no longer handle on their own. Tad immediately immersed himself in the service to mankind aspect of Sertoma. He volunteered to assist the Pipe and Drape Chairman, Kari Barnes, who praised him in the nomination speech. She remarked, "Tad has given more than most of us will know to the club and its members." She complimented him on his many innovations and his willingness to take on the chairmanship responsibilities. President Korte presented him with his award and added, "This year the rookies have been outstanding." He went on to list Tad's other achievements which include chairing the rookie party which will be held on February 21st and working extensively with the Winter Wonderland Project.

Lori Rubin since her return to the Brainerd area and the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club can only be described as a dedicated Service to Mankind member. Vision and hearing screening, pipe and drape, gossamer ceiling, flags and the Sertoma Fiesta at Confidence Learning Center are just a few of the "regular" activities she has been involved in to rack up 236 volunteer hours this past year. Her work with the marketing and sales aspects of Winter Wonderland have contributed enormously to the success of the project. She has been named co-chair for 2009. Her work with the Regional Convention held last May was outstanding and resulted in a nationally known speaker, Kathy Buckley, keynoting the event. Lori continues to involve her significant other and her family in her continuing efforts to make Brainerd a better place to live for all. She was humble about accepting this award and said, "I am really lucky to be in a club that provides such worthwhile activities that allow me to have fun and contribute."

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Rumor Corner
  • George and Sue V had a smartass contest before the meeting. Sue won.
  • Art has definitely made it as director emeritus of the red ticket program.
  • The "Fuzz" was excited when he arrived today--they have the ground hog day in Massachusetts, we have the first motorcycle on the highway--6 more weeks of winter of course.
  • Welcome back Randy Phillips. Your new protege Pete was sooooooo disappointed when the Prez informed him he couldn't do his Sertoman of the Day speech today. Oh well, keep it on the back burner for a week.
  • Kathy Williams complimented Pam on her speech making abilities when she urged everyone to make better use of the Sertoma Calendar. Kathy doesn't cry over spilt milk either--she is going to have to get a sippy cup for Sertoma since this is her second milk bath.
  • Mark Korte greeted the late Sandy Fowler at the door with a question what time is it? It is not Howdy Doody time, but Sertoma time.
  • Mike Boen got in a plug for Stella's list in his intro today.
  • Raboin etc??? Hmmm leaves a great deal to the imagination.
  • Mark encouraged the Dog Pound to take advantage of Senior Safety Day. Brian volunteered to be safety patrol to see that everyone got to the meeting.
  • Rumor has it Bryan Jelinski is going to be arrested for fraud--he cheated to make Raboin the winner of the ticket drawing. John has joined Facebook--Pam S offered to photoshop his picture so more people would check him out.
  • Brian was very upset that he missed the sexuality and body parts discussion last week. He was also complaining about the Valentine's Day stuff. Mike Boen was in the women's magazine wearing a pink shirt. Brian thought the whole idea was exclusionary. He appointed John Raboin the future Abe Lincoln and the spokesperson for the men's revolt. Brian definitely made a few feminist enemies especially since he fined all the women $2.
  • Sertomans at the Salad Bar are like a flock of sea gulls landing at the dump was the parting zinger from Mike Boen who felt a bit upstaged by his partner.
  • Brian left a mess up at the podium and the Prez offered to get a "woman" to clean up after him. Of course none of the poor penniless women would lift a finger to help Brian.
  • Judy our speaker denied knowing her classmate Brian Kirkpatrick--he said he didn't remember her at any of the keg parties.
