Mike Boen presented information today on the Radiothon to End
Child Abuse which actually begins broadcasting from the Mall
from noon to eight on Thursday, December 6th and concludes from
the radio station on Friday at noon. This program is in its
fourteenth year and has raised a total of $725,451. The
radiothon website is reached by clicking on Brainerd.com and
looking for the logo. The site contains the many donated auction
items with 100% of this money going to the local groups that are
involved. During the Radiothon each year, this website allows
you to track the progress, get details on auction items. and
find out more about child abuse prevention. The Radiothon has
also increased awareness of the problem in the area and all
Sertomans are encouraged to listen again this year to find out
what is being done in our communities to help end child abuse.
Please make S pledge, bid on valuable auction items and support
the 14th Annual Radiothon. The pledges are also part of the
statewide effort since 40% of those proceeds goes to PCAM
(Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota) and is principally used in the
education efforts. The 14th Annual Radiothon to End Child Abuse
is a joint effort by WJJY, B93.3 The Power Loon and Cool 103.5
radio, the Child Abuse Prevention Councils of Aitkin and Cass
Counties and the Crow Wing County Child Protection Team.
Thrivent, a fraternal benefit society of Lutherans offering
insurance, investment, educational, and volunteer opportunities
and services, has increased its matching pledge donation level
from $11000 to $12,000 this year. |

Sign-up for Winter
Wonderland jobs! |
| Brian Lehman is still lookiing for some
Salvation Army Bell Ringers for 18 hours (2 days at Cub
Foods). Call Brian if you can help. |
| Winter Wonderland Update Nanci Hallam
was looking for some volunteers for this weekend--check the
web page Thursday to see if there are still spots to fill.
Bring warm clothes no matter which job you sign up
for--people may have to shift to other jobs based on need.
Steve Mau and Steve Augustinack reported that Winter
Wonderland was open on Saturday and about 67 cars went
through in spite of the inclement weather. So far about
1,800 cars have been tallied and funds amount to about
$12,600. Thanks Scott Fisher for all your help with plowing
and again thanks to all who have volunteered. |
| Bonanza is missing a rope for one of the
Sertoma banners. If you borrowed them for anything and
might know where this is, please let Julia know otherwise
she has to order a new one. Also found was a pair of pierced
dangly earrings--see Pam Sachs if you would like them back. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
Mary
Kolkind of Sears was today's honored Sertoman. She joined
Sertoma 2 1/2 years ago when she took over the Sears store which
used to be located directly across from Bonanza. Lori Ukkelberg
was her sponsor. Mary was very excited about the prospect of
talking about her new building which has been her focus for the
past year. She hopes to get more involved in Sertoma activities
now that she has more time. Sears has moved 1 1/2 miles north on
Highway 371, but their address is still Edgewood. The new
building is south of the Pine Beach Road and much larger than
the old one with 4,000 square feet. The expanded 2,000 square
foot show room now contains such new additions as mattresses,
exercise equipment and many more home appliances. She also let
us know that they are expecting a shipment of snow blowers by
tomorrow since they are currently already out of stock!. If you
go into Sears to buy one of those handy items or to do your
Christmas shopping, please bring a a donation for the food
shelf. Two non perishable items will get you a discount on your
purchase and help to feed those in need in the Brainerd area. To
spread the word about their new facility, Sears will host a
Chamber Chow in February and they are planning a Grand Opening
in April. Mary was too shy to share anything embarrassing about
herself even though Joe Schulte was trying to supply her with a
lurid past as an exotic dancer. Mary's great husband of many
years has already had a ball playing Santa at the Winter
Wonderland. |

We received an wonderful thank you letter from the School District
nurses for our help with vision and hearing screening. So far
the screening has detected 133 vision problems and 12 hearing in
the 5th and 7th grade level. Bob Ehrich will have the sign up
sheet for the January 2 and 3rd screening of the ninth graders
at the South Campus next week. Lutheran Social Services also
thanked us for our recent $150 donation. On a somber note,
Julia was not here today because her father had a stroke. Our
prayers go out to her and her family and also to the Eigner's as
Peter struggles with his health.
Tom Rosenberger shared a part of his trip to Haiti with us.
He told us to be grateful for our blessings. He was after he
helped move a family of 8 from a shack the size of his fish
house to a new 24 X24 brick, concrete and tin house built by
Cross International. The original home which had a banana leaf
roof was not even waterproof. |

Business Notes |
|
We welcomed back Todd Dunlap who has much more time for Sertoma
since he has left his job at Bernicks due to corporate
downsizing. Mark Korte was our substitute President today and
he got in a plug for Nor-Son who built the wonderful new
building that was described by our Sertoman of the day.
Much credit should go to Mike Boen and the crew at BL
Broadcasting. They volunteered as a group at Winter Wonderland,
they provided all the advertising for it, and now they are hard
at work on preventing child abuse. |

-
Mark Korte recommended that all sergeants especially the
substitute ones be wearing a dunce cap or something so we could
save some money. Mark did a great job filling in for Julia.
-
Dan Holmes is your snow shovel salesman, Mary Kolkind is your
snow blower salesman, Darren Larson was assistant to the Prez,
and Carol Winegar is your one legged dentist.
-
Bonanza served ribs today with wet naps--I think they were
trying to tell Sertoma to clean up their act!
-
Paul Gropper needed a step stool for the "new" door at the Arb.
He also got the award for being the shortest Sertoman today from
Mark Korte.
-
Just exactly what were Steve Mau and Patti Hartman doing to be
LATE TOGETHER? Inquiring minds want to know.
-
No curling report from Raboin-match was postponed due to
inclement weather.
-
Bryan Jelinski shared some funnies today--points to ponder: If
the United States can find one cow that was born in Canada and
ended up in Washington due to the mad cow scare, why can't they
find the eleven million illegal aliens in the country. Bryan
suggested giving them each a cow. Secondly, Iraq needs a
constitution so we can give them ours since we are no longer
using it. Finally, The Ten Commandments cannot be posted in the
official buildings like court houses and legislatures since it
would create a hostile work environment for all the politicians
and lawyers involved.
-
Hmm Big Mike signed up his staff to work at Winter Wonderland
and then took off for Florida!
