Brian
Skogen and Missy Lake introduced Glen "Pat" Smith who was named
the 2006 recipient of our prestigious Service to Mankind Award.
When presented with the award, Pat remarked, "I have enjoyed my
years in Brainerd; the community has been good to my family and
me." Brian's presentation follows.
It is with great pride that the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club has
chosen "Pat" Smith as our Service to Mankind recipient. Pat has
been an active and dedicated member of our community since 1987
when he and his family moved here from Cloquet. Pat supports
various community projects volunteering his time and talents with
the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Northland Arboretum, the
Chamber of commerce and the Rotary.
Pat has been involved with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for more
than 12 years, serving as a leader in both groups. Two of his
children obtained the Eagle Scout Award while he was involved.
Pat has been an active member of the Northland Arboretum, serving
on the Board for nine years. While serving as President, Pat was
active on the building committee for the visitor center. The
Arboretum currently has 540 acres and is working on expanding to a
total of 1000 acres, with all of these remaining green space
forever. The Arboretum is presently visited by 35-50 people daily
which amounts to 12,800-18,250 per year. Besides Arboretum
sponsored activities, the Center has many weddings and meetings.
Pat has given the Arboretum tremendous support and countless
volunteer hours.
Pat has been a member of the Brainerd Area Chamber of Commerce
since 1987. As a member of the Chamber, he has been a director on
the board of the Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corporation.
BLADC is a non-porfit organization designed to help new and
expanding businesses find the resources they need. Pat served as
both first and second vice president during his term on that
board. Pat was recognized and appointed to serve on the loan
committee for the Central Minnesota Initiative Foundation as a
result of his work with BLADC.
For more than 25 years, Pat has been a Rotarian. He served as
President when he lived in Cloquet. The members of the Brainerd
Noon Sertoma Club are honored to present Glen "Pat" Smith with the
Service to Mankind Award. Pat's dedication has made him a role
model for our community.
The second part of our program was a presentation by Dan Levno who
is about to make a 776 mile jaunt across Alaska with his sled
dogs. He will be one of 14 mushers recreating the famous Serum
run. He is fulfilling a life long dream to dogsled through the
interior of Alaska. He was recently featured in the Brainerd
Dispatch and you can go to Nome or bust to read the fascinating
details. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
We
welcomed back long time member Deb Ryan who has continued to be
part of Sertoma but has been very busy with her family for the
past few years. She talked about her family background (her maiden
name is Sweet) which includes dirt racing which also seems to be
an important part of her husband Dan's life. Dan does Custom
Fireplace Installations and they have four children.
Deb became a member because of her long acquaintance with
Hopper and has served as both club and district secretary. She
worked on her rookie party also. She is now working with the
convention planning committee as their secretary.
Deb's current employment is with Tastefully Simple as a Senior
Consultant. She work out of her home doing direct sales of Gourmet
Foods. The company is based in Alexandria and has a staff of 250,
20,000 consultants, and $113 million dollars in sales in 2005. Deb
has offered to donate 20% of all her sales from now through
December 21st to the Peter Eigner fund. You can order directly
from her or go to her website at
www.tastefullysimple.com/web/dryan. Deb has been a member
for 8 years.
Her other hobbies include volleyball and camping. Welcome back
Deb!! |
