Brainerd
welcomed home the troops yesterday and complete coverage of the
event is in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch. Sertoma’s part in the
program was acknowledged from many sources including Brian
Jelinsky who personally delivered a thank you from two of his
returning employees and our speakers of the day SFC Chris Spieker
and SGG Pete Siekas. Brian delivered a message from Josh Heldt and
Eric Bock who wanted to tell us that our efforts meant the world
to them and they wanted to thank the Sertomans. Dave Burggraph who
organized the effort along with John Raboin thanked everyone for a
great show of support-- all the flag wavers who got to take part
in a super feel good activity, the radio stations for their
announcements and all the organizers who sent emails and called.
Our visiting soldiers said, “It was amazing, you guys did a
fabulous job of welcoming the troops home.” They also talked about
Sertoma as being a very visible organization that is part of the
backbone of the community.
They went on to talk about what is changing with the National
Guard. The comment was, “We are not going to slow down helping the
world.” That help has changed since the old days of Viet Nam and
even the first war in Iraq. The goal is to create self sustaining
units that include 2 tank, 2 infantry, and a forward support, and
an engineer company that allows the group to operate on its own in
what is called an FOB-Forward Operating Base. This involves taking
on a Marine mentality where everyone is a rifleman. They also
talked about how well prepared they are thanks to their special
training which includes the Virtual Reality Convoy Training
device. One evidence of that excellent training is the fact that
the Guard casualty percentage is 10% less than the regular army. A
question and answer period brought out the fact that current
deployment to Iraq has not affected the state active duty rosters
to the point where the Guard is not prepared to handle natural
disasters locally. Although 80% of the troops have been deployed
we still have about 4,000 available. The National Guard has met
recruiting quotas in the Brainerd area; in fact, we have the top
two recruiters in the state. Employers are encouraged to call the
recruiting office to get their questions answered. |

Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job

divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Joyce
Seymour was today’s honored Sertoman. Joyce spent most of her time
talking about her job at American National Bank which she has had
for six years. She was proud of the fact that they are now finally
a full service bank. They are located on Woida Road in Baxter but
they have a total of 10 offices.
Joyce is a Vice President and Loan Officer even after she
embarrassed Reed Campbell because of a new blouse with slippery
buttons. She and her husband Rob have been married for 23 years
and have a new granddaughter that has become her personal hobby.
She has one son at home who is 11 years old. Joyce was brought
into Sertoma by Terry Baltes and has been in the club 4 years and
has not had any trouble fulfilling her goal of becoming involved
with a great service organization. |

Our
littlest visitor was sitting between both her proud grandpas
today. Kylie Brenny is the granddaughter of both Dave Burggraph
and Chuck Brenny.
The Radiothon raised a total of $107,098, $85,000 of which will
stay in the area while the rest goes to the Prevent Child Abuse
Minnesota group.
The Festival of Trees raised a whopping $25,378 and Linda
Twaddle presented two special memorial ornaments to Lynn Franz and
Karla Nelson for all their hard work. |

- Karen Owen the voice of Missy Lake (and where did that
laryngitis come from?)
- Charlie returned today with his mosquito exterminator
business.
- Paul Koering had lunch yesterday with the farm boys and
judged a speech contest.
- Special thanks to Diane Rook Johnson and Andy Holmes who
volunteered for extra bell ringing duties on top of their
Sertoma efforts.
- John Raboin of course had to heckle the army boys—they were
nice to him though.
- The gossamer ceiling crew took the time to acknowledge how
helpful the guard guys have been when they have been decorating.
Julia Sullivan however wanted to know if her ladder which had
been deployed to Iraq had returned with the troops.
