Brainerd Sertoma - Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc & Baxter Police Chief James ExstedAs Dick Stoltman remarked when he entered the meeting room today, “We either have a speaker or we are all in trouble.” He was referring to the fact that our speakers of the day were Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc and the new Baxter Chief of Police of five months, James Exsted.

They spoke about the joint ventures that the two offices are undertaking. Except for the funding questions, both officers assured the Sertomans that their forces are in complete cooperation and work as one unit. As a later question brought out, there is very little political feeling for an actual merging of the two offices. John introduced Jim and explained that Baxter is fortunate to have him since he is a visionary leader. The three major joint ventures that their groups are cooperating on include the Safe and Sober Grant which has all law enforcement in the area working overtime during peak periods to attempt to reduce the number of traffic fatalities in the County which ranks 14th in the State.

They also talked about the Lakes Area Drug Investigation Division and thanked members of the task force for their input and help in the drug war. The final area that the two groups are working on is tech updates. The plan is to put laptop computers in all vehicles since our police are definitely out of date on this technology issue. The benefit of this, according to Exsted, is the elimination of redundancy as well as in the increase in efficiency. For instance, vehicle and license checks will only have to be entered once at the time of the stop rather than three or four times. It will also give access to up to date information on individuals while they are “in hand” so to speak. John told a funny story about the Crow Wing County Sheriff that involved him using his new computer and finding out that the woman he was “giving a ride to” was actually someone with several arrest warrants. The ability to access online pictures will be of great benefit to the officers also. This technology will also free up support staff to do other work and cut down on the need for more people.

Thanks Bonnie Franke for taking notes.

Announcements
Board Meeting - The big news is the fact that the Board has decided to try and go ahead with a bid for the Regional Sertoma Convention in 2008.
Bell Ringing - We can still win! The champion bell ringers so far are Bonnie Cumberland, Bonnie Franke and Diane Rook Johnson. Mike Howard is up for a four hour stint at Herbergers and we can still ring tomorrow in front of the old K Mart. In the spirit of the season, Rory decided to donate our fine money to the Salvation Army this week since most of the fines came from those who paid their dollar because they did not sign up to ring.
Brainerd Sertoma - We showed out appreciation for the fact that Deb who takes such good care of us is back as our server with a large tip from the room. She wished each and all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Jan 6 - New Member Induction, Sawmill Inn at Noon. Contact Kris Hoheisel (Welle) at Hawthorne if you need to sign up.

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.
