The Radiothon for Child Abuse has been in the
Brainerd area for eleven years. That first year the committee was
thrilled when Mike Boen called and said it looked like the event
had raised over $10,000. This was money that was then dedicated to
programs to help prevent child abuse including Kare Kits and Back
Packs for children who have been removed from their homes and a
number of positive programs that work with children.
The $450,000
that this event has raised in this area in eleven years has
allowed the Crow Wing County Child Protection Team to establish
Parent Works, a unique program that has helped children and
parents to eliminate the problems that cause removal of a child
from a home.
Bob and Ann Sherman of Midwest Captions again have
spent long hours setting up the website which will be up and
running Thursday and Friday December 2nd and 3rd and will give
everyone in the Brainerd Lakes Area a chance to bid on 425 auction
items as well as
make pledges. Four radio stations are involved
this year including WJJY, B93.3 The Power Loon and Cool103.5 This
year is also going to be special in that it will be a “televised”
Radiothon with the help of the Brainerd School District and Steve
Augustinack. Channels 8 and 15 will be airing the broadcast.
We
welcomed Ken Thomas and Tess Taylor from the radio stations. Ken
introduced Tess who is his new partner in the morning show. Tess
interviewed with Ken the day of the Chili Cookoff
so the process
involved a trip to the grocery store which she managed to survive.
She previously worked with ABC Radio in the Twin Cities. Beth
Fingston who heads up the Child Protection Team was next up
partnered with John Bolduc, Brainerd Police Chief. They focused on
the drug problem in the area and how important it is to have an
agency to deal with the children in these situations. Beth went on
to talk about the tremendous impact that the Radiothon has had on
her programs. Thanks to all of our guests for an informative
presentation. |

Forest View - The Brainerd area is once again
setting the pace for standards of education with the opening
of Forest View Middle School. Not only was this the best
answer to the space needs that the growth of the community had
created but it also creates a tremendous asset for the
community itself. If you did not have a chance to tour the
building yet, please do so if given the chance again.

| Today was a day when many people had to be
thanked for helping out. Rory and Bob Ehrich acknowledged
all of the Vision and Hearing helpers. Rory talked about the
radio exposure that we are getting through our “Salvation Army
Bell Ringer’s contest with the Rotary and Kiwanis and thanked
Brian Lehman for all his hard work. We are ringing bells
outside of Fleet Farm on the 7th, 24th, and 21st. The
Salvation Army counts on the event to help raise 50% of its
annual budget. Jean Marshon sent a nice thank you note to the
club for all their prayers and thoughts during her recent
illness. |
| Dec 19 - Bemidji Charter Banquet
- An invitation was issued today by Rory and Joe
Schulte to attend the upcoming Charter Banquet of the Bemidji
Sertoma Club which will be held Monday, December 19th, from
7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Northwood’s Steak House. Joe Schulte has
been very instrumental in the establishment of this new club
and deserves much of the credit for its establishment. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
| Sertoman of the Day
Sandra Bonde was today’s Sertoman of the Day. She has been a very
active member of Sertoma since her father, Bob Ehrich, brought her
into the Club four years ago. Sandra’s “big” job right now is
getting people to volunteer to be Sertoman of the Day. This is
very difficult to do and she deserves a great deal of appreciation
for taking on this task. Sandra had a very unique presentation—she
decided to show us her most embarrassing moment. It was captured
on tape during her wedding when she and her husband Erik had an
extremely difficult time lighting their unity candle. Sandra and
Erik have been married for a year and a half and have a daughter
Brigid. She enjoys reading, cross stitching, swimming and water
skiing. With her parents, she is an appraiser with Ehrich
Appraisals of Baxter. They specialize in residential real estate
appraisals and she has been working with the company for five
years. Sandra joined Sertoma because her father thought it would
be a good way for her to meet people and network. She helped with
her rookie party and also organized the Sertoma Relay for Life
Team one year. |

| Welcome back Ken Thomas (Mark
Hegstrom), Todd Dunlap and Merle Inns. |

| Rumor Corner |
- The John Raboin phone booth produced a real ringer
today—Steve Lastovich. Trent Bauman has gotten caught up in the
transformation process also—he decided to be Lori Abear.
- Several new nicknames came out of Jeff Birks “Happy
Fines” including Hide a Bed Jeff, Old Shirt Art, Happily Married
Chris, On Vacation Schulte and Old Fisherman Rosenberger.
