Today’s
program was a recap of the history of the brand new Bemidji
Sertoma Club which became official last week on December 13th.
Eleven members of the Brainerd Noon Sertoma including Master of
Ceremonies Joe Schulte traveled to the banquet. Honored guests
included officials from the International who were very quick to
point out that this was the first charter club this year. Joe has
joined this club also and he expressed his admiration for the
small but hardy group of individuals who managed a very ambitious
project that almost seemed doomed three years ago.
With Joe’s help a small core of four expanded to ten and then
to 27. One of our very own Charter Members, Bob Ehrich, was also a
guest at the banquet, proving as Rory said that Sertomans can
continue to be good enthusiastic members well beyond their first
year. In fact Bob has been a Sertoman for 26 years. Rory also
commented on the diversity in the club which greatly resembles our
own “Motley Crew”. This group has already gotten involved in
several fund raisers and in fact were collecting toys and food
shelf items for the Christmas season at their Charter Banquet.
Both Joe and Rory thanked everyone who has helped get this
new
club started. One of their very active members is Stacy Leaper who
spoke to our group a few years ago when she was promoting hearing
aide legislation. In the spirit of the Christmas Season,
Rory ended the program with a suggestion that has worked well for
him personally. He suggests that one of our presents to a loved
one should be a Christmas letter. In this age of email and cell
phones, taking the time to compose a handwritten letter of
feelings makes a very special keepsake.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes. |

| Announcements |
| Linda Twaddle talked today about the
success of the Festival of Trees. This gorgeous display
included 40 trees many of which were purchased and donated
back to the community including the hospital emergency center
and the women’s shelter which received the Dru and Erika
memorial tree. Thanks Lynn Franz for creating a very special
tree for Sertoma. Linda explained that our “Lasting Memories”
tree was purchased by a local family for their dying mother.
It was her last Christmas tree. The seniors and kids had a
great time and the event raised $20,000 for Bethany. |
| Brian Lehman is still working hard trying
to beat the bell ringing total hours of the Kiwanis and
Rotary. Vice President Dave Clausen remarked that we are
just starting our efforts to promote bell ringing in our club
and we have an excellent chance to win the competition. Even
if we do not win, the Salvation Army and the many people who
benefit from their programs are “winners”. Call Brian if you
can still help out—there are some indoor spots available for
those who cannot be outside. |
| Sai Gau Scholarships are available for
students who are in their second year of post secondary
schooling (including high school seniors who have been
attending college). Dave Burggraff has a printable copy of
the application. Just email him at
dave@burggraff.com
and he will send it to you. |
| Dec 21 - Board Meeting and Trip to
Aberdeen After 7 a.m. Board Meeting at Northwinds Grill,
Steve Mau and those interested in pursuing the Winter
Wonderland Lights Festival for next year will travel to
Aberdeen to view theirs. Call Steve if you are interested and
would like to go. |

Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Gene
Farone was today’s honored Sertoman. Gene recently moved to
Brainerd and calls himself a “former Cityite”—that is one of those
people who weekended in the area for years. Gene is the general
manager for Lake Region Storage and he describes his job as,
“Offering solutions to people who are spatially challenged”. Lake
Region is located on Highway 371 and consists of 415 units with
165 climate controlled, 50 set up for RV’s, and one large
“drive-in” cooler. Key pads, door alarms and free trailers to move
items are also included. They have another branch in Duluth. Gene
graduated from St. Cloud State University and his most recent job
before he came to Brainerd was in middle management with Dakota
Community Homes for people with developmental disabilities . His
wife, Shelli, who is currently the office manager at Camp
Confidence worked in their one hour photo developing business as
well as substitute teaching. Shelli and Gene have two children, a
daughter in college and a thirteen year old "practicing comedian"
son. His avocation is currently supervising the construction of
their new home near Pequot Lakes. His most embarrassing moment
involved words like “fart and “butt” and can be discussed in
detail at the next social event for those of you who missed it.
Val Fiksdal invited him to join. He had a history of helping
others and was looking for a way to give back to the community.
Welcome to Sertoma Gene. |

| Rumor Corner |
- Rare bird sighting by the Dog Pound, one of them actually
caught Scott Fisher working at his Liquor Store.
- Greeters named Olson were mighty hard to spot today at
Sertoma also.
- Goodbye Milo Johnson, he is officially retired and on his
way to Snowbird Heaven next week. A special thanks from Pooch
for all his hard work in Sertoma and a round of applause sent
him on his way.
- Raboin is now claiming to be a back-up singer for
Neil
Diamond.
- Hope Kris had enough money left from her honeymoon to pay
her wedding fine today. Congrats on your nuptials.
- See David Allen Pundt's drag queen photo-he was to be fined
today but we only got to admire his picture.
- Bah Mark Humbug Korte got fined today too for being our
local Scrooge.
- Our sergeants also wanted to know what Bob Sherman had been
doing these days besides growing his hair.

| Photos Photos Everywhere New photos
go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This
community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the
opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as
well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to
thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive
feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the
current photographs or check out the new online directory go
