Paul
Bloom attended today’s meeting not just strictly as a Sertoman
but also wearing the hat of Brainerd School administrator. His
purpose in speaking was to inform us about the progress that has
been made in the efforts to turn the Franklin Junior High
Building into a center for the arts. A preliminary agreement has
been signed with Artspace, a nonprofit organization based in the
Twin Cities, selling them the building. The asking price is
still negotiable, but could be upwards in the million and a half
range if the preliminary work indicates that this will be a
profitable area to locate a facility. June 1, 2005 would see the
purchase completed and a 2 year projected time period for
extensive remodeling.
The plans include 24 apartments with built in work space
available for rent to artists ranging from painters to poets .
Other studios would be available for those who just want a place
to work. Galleries, a coffee shop/restaurant/wine bar, some
retail stores related to the arts, and the offices of the
Crossing Arts Alliance would all be part of the plan.
Tentatively the district would like to lease back the auditorium
and gym space to continue using it for school and community
events. They would also retain the playing fields.
Questions at the end centered on a discussion of what would
happen to the proceeds. Paul suggested that one popular idea is
to build a performing arts center attached to the high school. A
very interesting handout described a similar plan to renovate an
old school that was completed in Duluth called Washington
Studios. Washington Junior High School was closed in 1992 after
81 years of service. The Artspace shares the building with a
city-run community center and it contains 39 live/work units.
That remodeling project cost $7.1 million. Since its completion
it has become a hub of community activity. We would hope that
the Brainerd plan would not only give artists a community center
but serve as a tourist attraction as well. Tearing down the
building could cost as much as a million dollars. |

Pam goofed on the last name. Steve won auction for the JJY
Radiothon shirt. Pam should have gone to the MSN Website and used
the Find a Name to go with That Face photo album to check his last
name. If you haven’t had your picture taken for the online
directory, please do so and keep Pam from making any more
mistakes. |

with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket

Sertoman of the Day
|
Joe
Vreeland was today’s honored Sertoman. Joe started out by
telling us that his father-in-law, a noted inspirational
speaker, gave him some pointers on speaking before an audience.
He got a good chuckle when he told us he was imagining all of us
naked and it was a pretty scary experience. He has been married
to his wife Julie for 24 years and they have four children. “My
three sons” as he called them are pretty well grown up and two
are in college and one graduates from Brainerd this year. He
explained that he has put away the footballs and learned all
about Barbie dolls since he and his wife decided to adopt a
little girl who is now four years old. His business background
is in sales and marketing and he recently returned to Brainerd
after several moves and several different jobs which included
working UPS and part ownership in Brainerd Glass Company. Joe is
now in real estate and and is enjoying his career because it
enabled him to get back to the Brainerd area. Outdoor activities
of any kind are on the Vreeland agenda including hunting,
fishing, and camping. He handed out brochures, nifty
refrigerator magnets and invited us all to visit his website
www.mncabinhunter.com.
Tami Webb chained him up and dragged him into Sertoma—but he was
perfectly willing to become a part of our organization for two
reasons. First, he was too old for Jaycees and secondly, he
believes that you get back from the community only what you put
into it. Welcome to Sertoma Joe and thanks for sharing yourself
with us. |

|
Of Note: |
|
|
|
Congratulations Bob and Lorraine Ehrich on 43 years of wedded
bliss as of today. |
|
|
|
Bonnie Franke is now home from the hospital and Kathy Williams was
able to attend today’s meeting. On a more somber note Jean
Marchand lost her brother from Alaska. The funeral will be here on
Saturday with viewing Friday.
|
|
|
|
Luke Jordan, Kathy Bittner Lee, Paul Gropper, and Deb Ryan have
all joined the list of parents to be lately. Kevin Goedker and
Cindie got off that list and onto the new baby list with the birth
of their son on Friday. He was a bit early but all are doing well |
|
|
|
President Potvin shared a thank you note from the Rod Converse
family to all Sertomans who expressed their sympathy and gave
their support after their recent bereavement. He also read one
from CLC for the Scholarship Fund. |

Rumors Corner: |
- John Raboin is working on getting a patent for something
called “Short Johns”?
- Thanks to Joe Vreeland for his humor as Sertoman of the day,
or should we just call him Barbie’s Buddy?
- If you didn’t attend the Camp Confidence Christmas Open
House on Tuesday you missed a great event that included “camp”
activities and great camp food like yummy buffalo burgers.
- What retired teacher is into gambling casinos—she had to
take advantage of the trip she won at the rookie party but is
going back for more this next weekend too?
- Luke Jordan wins the forgetfulness of the week award—a newly
inducted member should take his membership materials with him
when he leaves the meeting. Luke also didn’t have either a
business card or a pen to writer out his new name badge today.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our
new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy
to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any
photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow
Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job
or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
