Program
Beth Pfingsten - RadiothonMike Boen has been working very actively these past weeks with our speaker, Beth Pfingsten from the Crow Wing County Protection Team. Thursday and Friday of this week is the Radiothon for Child Abuse which has been held in the area for the past ten years and also in Alexandria and Bemidji. Last year this effort raised $366,421 which supports services. Special Sertoma thanks to Northland Auto for their donation of a used car and to Preferred Hearing for their donation of a hearing aide. Beth was here to thank our organization for their contribution and received our check which we give annually at this time. The contributions to the Radiothon have allowed many good works that directly benefit children and provide excellent learning activities for the protection teams in the area. Beth was very enthusiastic about last year’s symposium with Brainerd Medical Center on poverty. She also talked about the 900 personal care kits which have been assembled and distributed to schools and social services groups so that kids who don’t have such simple things as toothbrushes and deodorant have them available. Beth felt that their First Night in Care Backpacks (for children who have been removed from their homes) that contain many of these personal items as well as underwear, pajamas, and a stuffed toy or game are an excellent idea that will spread from Brainerd quickly. The teams that benefit from this radiothon include Aitkin, Cass, and Crow Wing Counties. One of their main focuses is on their work with families where intervention has been necessary because the child is in danger. Their parenting education classes called ParenRadiothon LogotWorks are intensive attempts to work with families in the 6 month time period the law allows to resolve the issues that have separated them. Mike held an impromptu auction to sell the current version of the radiothon shirt. Steve Johnson was the lucky winner and his $40 bid will be part of next year’s total. Thanks to Bob and Ann Sherman for their involvement in the Radiothon for Child Abuse and their hard work on the website which can be reached by going to www.brainerd.com and clicking on the earphones.

His present duty is Chaplain. He and his wife Lucy have been married for 14 years and share six children, 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild in their amalgamated family. Les spent 40 years in the printing business during which time he also did 30 years in the regular army and the National Guard including some time in Germany. He currently works part time for Auto Value. Les has been a big part of the Camp Confidence scene for many years. His hobbies include his motorcycle, boating, snowmobiling and fishing. Thanks for sharing some history with us today and for helping to build this club Les.
Of Note:

Two of our own Sertoma ladies are not feeling very well and could use your prayers and thoughts. Kathy Williams fell and broke her wrist and had to have major surgery to repair the damage. She will be home recuperating for the next few weeks and could use your encouragement. Bonnie Franke is in the hospital after some serious surgery and could also use your prayers and encouragement.
Welcome the new full fledged Sertoma members who were at the induction on Tuesday Dec 2nd: (left to right) Luke Jordan, Darlene Kersting, Greg Larson, Kandis Keys, Mark Fyten, and Joe Vreeland.

Rumors Corner:
  • Hearing Screening has been scheduled for the Dog Pound—Rory thinks they all need their ears checked.
  • Who gets to turn off Edie Hindman’s battery—we all want to know.
  • We had another edition of the Diane Rook Johnson outdoor camping saga. Hawk does get carried away with details.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
