Menards new store in Brainerd Baxter was the subject of today's
meeting. We were privileged to meet two very fine people who
work there--Vince Jensen who is the hardware manager and Greg
Larson who is the general manager. Menards is the largest home
supply store in the Midwest with 170 stores. When Greg started
working for the company in 1984, they had only 24 stores. The
other interesting fact is that this store design is brand new
with only five in the whole country. Brainerd has the only one
right now with the prototype design and it is the largest in the
state. Mr. Larson is a very humorous speaker
who introduced
himself and explained that he moved here from Litchfield to open
the Brainerd store. He has traveled all over opening stores for Menards and intends to stay in the Brainerd area. His eldest son
will attend CLC this fall, the second oldest one is finishing
his education at his old high school "sub-contracted" to an
aunt, and the youngest boy is a soccer star. His wife moved here
even though she thought of Brainerd as "that dark place" after
an first-time experience with camping out in a forest near
Brainerd on a pitch dark night. They have been married for 22
years. Vince got to show everyone the toys. They brought a new
line of Skill Tools that feature lights to help make all your
projects easier. Some of the girls in the audient latched onto
the one that had the "automatic stud finder", of course
misinterpreting the use of the tool entirely. We also saw some
Black and Decker items and Coleman products. If you were a lady
looking for an idea for a Christmas present for your favorite
handyman, they were certainly plentiful. Vince's last product
was Orange Anti-Icer that works very well because it is not
harmful to the environment fas 829-7762 Kathy Bittner Lee and
works best when applied before a snow. He said we had probably
seen it on tv but he never gets a chance to watch tv because he
is working so hard. Greg echoed that with the fact that they
were scrambling to meet the needs of all their new customers
because they had underestimated their traffic. but they were
over the new store jitters and working well now. He invited
everyone to come in and browse the new store. |

See Rory Coit for fish house tickets to sell. Thank you
Julie Sullivan for volunteering to collect tickets and money and
keep track of the fund-raiser. Remember we only have until January
22 to get these sold. Hopefully they will be on display at Ace
Hardware (thanks Dan Holmes) before Christmas and flyers with
pictures will be available for ticket sellers. |

Diane Rook Johnson has developed an efficient method of handing
out dues statements. They are alphabetized in a box and
will be handed around at meetings and eventually the remainder
will be put in the mail. Pick up your dues statement at one of the
next meetings please. |

Call Kari Robinson at home if you would like to attend the

Schedule |
|
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

Our prayers go out to Cathy Christensen who is dealing with
multiple illnesses in her family right now.
We have been teasing Lynn about her broken arm but it is quite
serious and will require a lot of surgery to heal. We wish you a
speedy recovery Lynn. |

The true meaning of Christmas was very evident at Camp
Confidence's annual Christmas get together and meeting. Many
familiar Sertoma faces are shown in the picture with Charlie in
his Christmas get up including the Kortes, Jeff Olsen, Steve
Augustinack's son Paul with Santa, and Ted Carson kibitzing with
Gary Loge. There were many others from the club in attendance. The
Christmas tree was filled with presents for Camp and Jeff was very
appreciative of all the support given by everyone who volunteers
at Camp. |

Many Thanks |

To Sertoma Volunteers: Bob Ehrich, Dave Clausen, Brenda
Meech, Paul Gropper, Terry Curtis, Kristine Welle, Julie
Sullivan,Bob Sherman, Kevin Goedker, Richard Peterson, Scott
Fisher, Lowell Carlson, David Pundt, and Charlie Bartles, Thanks
so much for a job well done on our annual seventh grade vision
and hearing clinic December 4,2002 at Mississippi Horizons
Schools, and at such short notice! We screened 144 students with
15 showing possible hearing difficulties and 19 with potential
vision problems. As you are aware, because of staff constraints,
our school district would not be able to offer these students this
opportunity without your continuing dedicqation to this program.
Than you for all your help. Mary Lastovich
The YMCA sent a thank you letter for our part in the
construction and renovation of a new and much improved facility.
They are also looking for contributions to the Y Partners Campaign
that provides youth and families unable to access the facilities
due to financial hardship with opportunities to do so. Last year
the Brainerd Family YTMCA provided free or reduced memberships to
over 450 youth and families totalling $54,500.

Find a Sawbuck Corner: Call 829-7761
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond. |

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
