Program
Gary Walters is probably most famous in the Brainerd area for his last four organized efforts to raise money and promote mentorship for Kinship Partners. Gary biked from New Orleans, walked across Minnesota, Perched on the Water Tower, and swam Lake Mille Lacs. However, he also is a very important part of Sertoma. A Past President, he is currently serving as District Governor and in that capacity he attended the International Convention Last week. He gave us some statistics since the most pressing problem Sertoma faces is its shrinking membership. Currently the nation has 593 clubs with 17,000 members. We belong to the Great Plains Region which is the biggest one and currently hold the title of the World's largest club although that may be in dispute right now. The Initiatives that came from this gathering included a new guideline that says all new clubs must have a minimum of 25 members to start and must maintain that minimum. The group also voted to merge the International and the Foundation. This will save paperwork and bring more money into the Foundation since membership will no longer be optional. Gary remarked that he just learned that 100% of the "Fellow" monies is GEM Award. The fellow donation of $100 or more raised $98,000 last year. He encouraged people to follow the advice of the keynote speaker when trying to promote new members, Ask the potential member what they would like to get out of their service club. He concluded his remarks with the comment, "Our club is phenomenal and other Sertomans want to know how we do it." Each year our rookies achieve GEM Awards that make us a leader in that area also.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes!

Sertoman of the Day
Bill Goers is pictured with his famous accordion. He volunteered to be Sertoman of the Day and shared more of his fun anecdotes about his family. He and his wife Vicki have been married for 30 years and have four children. The youngest is 17 and they are contemplating the phenomenon of having spare time and what to do with it. Bill likes the outdoors, music, woodworking, and sitting by the campfire with a guitar and a box of wine. He is the President and Owner of Cygneture Title and Abstract. He originally was an absentee partner in the business but moved to Brainerd in 1998 to take the reins. The company's job is to make ownership issues clear for real estate brokers and land buyers and sellers. They usually participate when a sale is executed. Bill does not specialize in paper work, instead is good at challenges and dealing with problems. His second most embarrassing moment (who can forget the Barbi Doll in the ear story) was meeting an old girlfriend in the grocery store and asking her when her baby was due--unfortunately she wasn't pregnant at the time. Bill came to Sertoma by way of Karen Owen and has served as sergeant, captained the social committee, and headed up a flag team as well as being an integral part of his rookie party.
Of Note
Our prayers included Joyce Frid who was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and is waiting for further details.
Rumor Corner
  • Welcome back Tina Dunlap, just in time to win money.
  • Bob Nibbe has a cute summer haircut and according to a certain wise guy from Cub Foods has finally almost filled in his summer sandbox.
  • Learn what kind of a car Sergeant Mary drives--she fines you if you don't wave at her.
  • Chuck Brenny, Alaskan insurance executive, had to pay a big fine for his trip.
  • Heidi Funk is joining Sertoman because (Raboin quote) "She is tired of the Rotarians taking out their teeth after dinner." Visiting the Rotarians when Sergeant Mary is giving a Crisis Line speech is expensive also--ask Amie Anderson.
  • Karla Kay Nelson Nelson got fined for being the only person who included their middle name on their roster info.
  • Jerry Peterson who looked like a grocery store manager wannabee (Mary's wit again) probably won't wear that spiffy white shirt too often.
  • Mr. Clausen was encouraged to wear his pin even if he had to pin it on his underwear to save his expensive duds.
  • Gary Walters poked a little fun at our new southern fearless International Leader who has lots of "idears".
  • Mary isn't even afraid of the big bad sheriff with all that fancy stuff on his chest--she fined him for not having a pin amidst the other official stuff.
