Diane
Rook Johnson changed her "hat" today. She took off her cute blue
Sertoma hat and replaced it with a gorgeous feathery chapeau
covered with flowers and butterflies. Diane wanted to encourage
all Sertomans to enjoy and participate in the many activities
offered by the Northland Arboretum. Diane serves as President of
the Board at "the Arb" and feels that everyone should be aware
of the 540 acre oasis of green in the center of the the
Brainerd-Baxter sprawl. For $25 (single) or $30 (family)
a
membership will give anyone the chance to enjoy this happening
place. There is the Monet Pond, the Memorial Garden with its
peaceful , the Rain Garden, the Butterfly Garden and the best
cross country ski trails in Minnesota (if and when we ever have
some snow). Halloween brings the haunted trails. Christmas this
year will not only include a Day with Santa but will also be the
opening season for the Winter Wonderland Sertoma lights project.
Diane was quick to remark about how excited the Arb is to be a
part of this endeavor. Many of these projects are planned and
executed by volunteers.
The
Arboretum recently received a grant and is participating in the
Grow to Learn program that has given many special needs adults
the opportunity to improve their gardening skills and apply for
similar employment opportunities. The Arboretum appreciates all
donations and has a updated wish list on their website,
http://arb.brainerd.com/.
They are planning the second Blind Wine Tasting fund raiser for
Thursday, September 13th from 6-9 p.m. at the Visitor Center
with an opportunity to try to identify 12 different wines by
taste alone. A grand prize is offered and many door prizes.
Tickets are $30 in advance and will sell out fast since last
year's event was so popular. Diane assured everyone there will
be plenty of food and a Ballroom Dancing demonstration.

The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half

| Sertoman of the Day |
Our
Chairman of the Board Steve Mau was today's honored Sertoman. He
spoke briefly about Brainerd General Rental and Mini Storage
that has been in existence for 15 years. He and his family moved
here from Chicago in 2002 in take over the business and lead a
simpler life style. Steve even spent a few years living in
Europe. The business has five full time and 3 part time
employees and anything you might need to rent. Steve has been
married to Maureen for 15 years (see anniversary at the
induction picture by Tom Krekow of Aaron Thomas Photography) and
they have three children 11,9 and 6. . He took her on a romantic
ride on the Zephyr to propose and had a very embarrassing moment
when the conductor announced his engagement before he popped the
question. His Sertoma sponsor was George Kohan and he jumped in
with both feet and has served as president and currently is
Chairman of the Board. He is very active in Pipe and Drape and
Winter Wonderland. |
