Program
Brainerd Sertoma - Dr. James J DehenOne of the benefits of being a member of Sertoma and regular attendance at meetings is the opportunities presented by the program committee to learn. Today was a good example.

Dr. James J. Dehen from the Brainerd Medical Center presented a serious discussion of Venous Reflux Disease and the new treatment that has emerged. Seventy two percent of women and 42% of men have some kind of trouble with the veins in their legs. This amounts to about 25 million people in the United States. Standing jobs contribute greatly to the problem (unfortunately for our speaker, his example was a checker at “Cub” Foods). This new procedure called closure has been used by the clinic for the last 18 months with a 99% satisfaction rate. This is strictly a medical procedure for those who have fatigue and pain and as such is fully covered by insurance.

One of our members presented a personal example and explained that her husband was dancing about a week after the surgery. Hawk wanted to know if the procedure was guaranteed to make you a better dancer!!

Thanks Joyce Frid for taking notes!!!!
Announcements
The Flag crews will be out for one of our final activities. If you should get a call to help out, please do so.
Festival of Trees Linda Twaddle presented this year’s information on this worthwhile activity which helps to keep many of the residents at their non profit facility in care when their funds are exhausted. The date has been changed to November 12th through the 17th. Contact Linda for more information.
Sept. 3 - Run Volunteers Wanted - LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP TO WORK AT THE RALLY NEXT WEEK. Many volunteers are needed to help with the silent auction and to sell raffle tickets.
Sept. 9 - Noon Sertoma’s official golf team will be competing with other Sertoma Clubs in the Area to donate a camper ship since Daren Larson, Dave Clausen, Karen Owen and Erica Eigner have all paid their way individually. The Board did vote to sponsor a team, but instead the money will be used to support this competition.
Sept. 21 - NO Meeting. Chili Cookoff for United Way. Also this date has been set as the Ditch pick Day to help insure that our cook (Gary Loge) can make the festivities.
Sept. 22 - New member induction at Sawmill Inn-plan on attending with your sponsor. See Sandy Kleist to sign up. This one is at noon.
Sept. 23 & 24 - First scheduled Pipe and Drape at the "Ageless Expo" at the Civic Center. We have to set up 30 booths so make room on your schedule.

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Speaker of the Day - Verna HawkinsonVerna Hawkinson gave us a very funny picture of her life especially since she met Hawk.

Verna has had many jobs over the years mostly in the factory world, but she is currently an integral part of Dream Builders Construction. This company was founded in 1999 and has expanded to include 9 employees. She works with payroll, advertising, handbooks, safety meetings and directly with customers.

Together they have three grown up children and one grandson. Her hobbies include gardening, boating and vacationing. She was born in Fosston, Minnesota and grew up near Inver Grove Heights. Her sponsor was her husband Hawk and she has enjoyed her three years in Sertoma. She is excited about becoming a Chamber Ambassador this year. Her most embarrassing moment was a story involving travel and something Hawk insisted she do.

Of Note
Everyone is encouraged to bring potential members to a Sertoma meeting with the Club picking up the cost. However, you will be billed $9.50 for any other guests.
