Program
Sertoman Speaker - Kevin GoedkerKevin Goedker took the podium today to tell us about a new program which he has sponsored as part of his governmental experience.

The Brainerd City Council was the first in the state to pass a resolution supporting Character Initiative. Character can be defined as inward motivation to do what is right and the city will be working for the next year to promote good character and quality character traits. Kevin has had personal experience with the positive effect of concentrating on improving character with his military experiences where the marines focused on 14 leadership traits to improve morale.

His new committee is promoting and putting these traits in the forefront. The group consists of 11 members representing each sector of the community. They are currently looking for three more members representing business, family, and the faith community. Their plan of action includes working with media and schools. The character initiative has many examples of success throughout the country.

Bonnie Cumberland is representing the educational community on the committee and was available to answer questions along with Kevin. Kevin concluded his speech with a comment, “This program is about developing the leadership to guide our community into being a good place to live, work and play.” We are being asked to stretch ourselves beyond the box and reach our capabilities and in doing so make our community a better place to live.

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes!!!!
Announcements
Apply to Become an Arboretum Member - Diane Rook Johnson is managing the effort to promote membership in the Arboretum among Noon Sertoma members. Memberships cost $20 for individuals and $30 for families and include free admission and parking, member’s only events, and zone and plant information to mention just a few of the benefits. This area is preserved and maintained by donations and future plans include a pond which will open the area up for fishing and boating activities for kids.
Sept. 3 - Run Volunteers Wanted - LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP TO WORK AT THE RALLY NEXT WEEK. Many volunteers are needed to help with the silent auction and to sell raffle tickets.
Sept. 9 - Noon Sertoma’s official golf team will be competing with other Sertoma Clubs in the Area to donate a camper ship since Daren Larson, Dave Clausen, Karen Owen and Erica Eigner have all paid their way individually. The Board did vote to sponsor a team, but instead the money will be used to support this competition.
Sept. 22 - New member induction at Sawmill Inn-plan on attending with your sponsor. See Sandy Kleist to sign up.
Sept. 23 & 24 - First scheduled Pipe and Drape at the Agents Expo at the Civic Center. We have to set up 30 booths so make room on your schedule.

Greeter Schedule
Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Patty Hartman.

Sertoman of the Day
Sertoman of the Day - Holly ConnakerNew member, Holly Connaker, was born in Brainerd and recently moved back. She and her husband have an 18 month old son.

Her hobbies include boating and Arabian horses. She raises and shows and competes on a national level. She attended William Woods University and graduated with a degree in business and psychology. She has spent several years in outside sales including technical and pharmaceutical sales.

Holly joined to become a member of an organization that really gets involved in the community and stresses volunteering. She owns and operates the local branch of Help U Sell which is a national firm with 850 offices. It is the oldest and fastest growing fee for service firm in the nation. Holly was double embarrassed-she told us about her strapless gown incident and then had to listen to Kevin explain that he was there!

  • Not too many people today-must have been a splendid day for golf somewhere.
  • John Raboin legally changed his name to Jim Potvin Junior at today’s meeting
  • Viking Books are a better investment than a 401K according to the promoter.
  • Welcome back Steve Augustinack-we missed you.
  • Pam waited patiently to be fined for coming home from the wedding in Seattle with a black eye-but alas Paul Gropper was overworked and didn’t notice.
  • PS The guy with the pony tail was Bob Sherman-thanks Bob for filling in for me.
