Blue
Thunder Baseball was the topic of discussion at today's meeting in
honor of the expedition planned to the game on Thursday, August
11th. Steve Mau and Julia Sullivan substituted for the
representative who was supposed to make the presentation. Steve is
the announcer along with Gus and Julia is in charge of the
concessions.
This is the third baseball team that has attempted to make
Brainerd its home. The owners realize that this previous
experience will mean hard work to make a success of the wooden bat
league team. Steve explained that that means the players are
college students who retain their eligibility by playing in a
pro-like league. The schedule is 68 games in 60 days and the
players get a taste of "chasing the dream". The Northwoods League
has 12 teams in places including Wisconsin, Canada and Iowa. The
Blue Thunder has a 500 average and this week is the last
opportunity to see them play. The owners are local and they are
working hard to fit into the community. For instance they donated
$1 of each admission to Camp Confidence on their day at the ball
game. The players live out of a suitcase and have some strict
rules to follow.
One of the players who started the season was drafted by the
Cincinnati Reds and is now playing on their minor league team.
There are lots of kid and adult "fun" activities that take place
during the game. Deck cost is usually $17 per person, but groups
are encouraged to take over the space for a game to get a variety
of people at the games. Attendance in Brainerd is lowest in the
league. For instance the Madison team averages about five thousand
per game and we are around 400. Steve is looking forward to
pitching the first ball on Thursday. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Lori
Ruben who has returned to the Brainerd Noon Sertoma Club was
today's honored member. Lori joined our club when she moved to
Brainerd seven years ago. She was brought into the club by Paul
Gropper who was also the person who helped her get a fresh start
when she and her three children were re-grouping after her
divorce. Paul renting her a place to live helped her get settled.
She eventually started working for Integra and her job finally
took her to St. Cloud so she transferred to the West Side Sertoma.
She is very proud of her project there which was to organize a
comedy night starring Scot Hanson who is a personal friend of
hers.
Lori is a Cass Lake native. She currently works for Screaming
Eagle Promotions which is a Twin Cities based company that has
promotional products that include apparel and almost anything that
could convey your business logo to the public. Lori's goal is to
be a much more active member of Sertoma and she ended her speech
with "I have blond moments all the time, so spend 10 minutes with
me and we can share my embarrassing moments!" |

Dave Burggraph stopped to see Pam Bye and gave us an update today.
Pam and Randy have finally moved into their new home. She is
feeling pretty good right now but is scheduled for a second round
of chemo soon. They plan to replace their restaurant by adding on
to the Timber Mist Building. The debris from the fire has been
cleaned up and things are looking much better. |
