One
of the most interesting jobs I ever had for Camp Confidence was
selling tickets at the Blue Grass Festival in the Twin
Cities. For a couple of years I had the privilege of
attending the Festival and learned to enjoy what our noon visitors
called a truly American experience. Bluegrass music had its
origins in the United States.
Kari Dayton and Cindy Roggenkamp
joined us today to invite us to the Lakes Bluegrass Festival on
August 27th-29th at Ski Gull. It
will feature two nationally known bands—Valerie Smith and
Liberty Pike from Tennessee and David Davis and the Warrior River
Boys from Alabama. Bluegrass is a style of performance
characterized by mostly non-electric stringed instruments
including five string banjo, mandolin guitar, upright bass and
fiddle. The thing that should make a bluegrass newbie
consider attending is the “picking” that goes on at all
hours. You can wander from group to group and see total
strangers get together and make great music. Impromptu jam
sessions welcome pickers from beginners to advanced.
Stage shows are schedule from 3-10
p.m. on Friday, 11:00-10:00 on Saturday and Sunday begins with a
9:00 a.m. non-denominational service and gospel sing featuring the
Sr. Choir of the local Lutheran Church of the Cross and ends at
with the 4 p.m. drawing for the acoustic guitar. Another
bonus is a chance to win the 202 Nautilus Sport Deck which Ski
Gull will give away Saturday night (and no Pooch it does not come
with the girls pictured.) Tickets are available for all weekend or
daily and buying them in advance will save money.
Cindy stressed that this is a
family event and children under twelve are admitted free and teens
are half price. Unlike other music festivals, the family
orientation is an important part of the event. Food is
available all weekend, so grab your tent, a lawn chair and
grandpa’s old fiddle and hustle off to an event that benefits
Ski Gull. In the years that Ski Gull has been open, it has
offered over 12,000 6th grade students from all over
the area the opportunity to learn a life skill for a free or
nominal fee. Cindy also wanted to thank all of the local
businesses that are sponsoring this great event which will bring
between $70,000 and $100,000 in extra revenue to the area.
THANKS
RITA JOHNSON FOR TAKING NOTES. The note takers from
now on will be simply whoever volunteers for the day. See
Rory before the meeting to pick up the sheet; it is very self
explanatory and easy to use. Only 48 or so people have to
volunteer once a year to cover this task that makes Pam’s job so
much easier.

| Announcements |
| Rookies who
missed today’s meeting—check with Denny Benjamin and the
newly formed Rookie Committee to get involved with the
Rookie Party. Everyone who qualifies as this year’s
Rookie (joined after last year’s party) should plan on
helping to make this the biggest and best rookie event
ever. |
| Volunteer
Cards were passed out today. The cards come in two
versions and will be available on the table where the badges
are kept. Regular members need to pick up a card when
they have participated in a Sertoma event that involves
volunteer hours such as the Gossamer Ceiling, Pipe and Drape,
the Flag Project, and others. Fill it out and drop
it in the bucket with your badge. Rory feels that this
will benefit the club tremendously since it will allow us to
chart participation and try to encourage more involvement by
everyone. Rookies are required to achieve 5 hours of
service in order to be inducted. Therefore it is the
responsibility of the sponsor to pick up a service card and
explain the programs to the new members. Once the five
hours are recorded, these cards are turned into Kristine Welle
directly, since she will handle organizing the inductions as
Sertoma Secretary. |
| Hawk and Jeff
Kozitza are among the cast of the murder mystery dinner play
that Lord of Life is putting on to help raise money for a
youth bus. If you want to support the cause, you
need to make a reservation within the next week since seating
is limited. Check with either one or the church if you
are interested in attending. |
| Aug 3 & 5- New Member
Inductions at Noon at the Sawmill and Aug 5th at 5:30 at TJ’s
Log Cabin. Kristine Welle has the sign up sheet. Call
Kristin at 822-1133 or email her at wellek@brainerd.net
to get signed up if you did not have a chance to do so at
today’s meeting. This is the last induction that will take
place before the new program of service is in force. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Sertoman
of the Day |
Missy
Lake was today’s honored Sertoman. Missy claims she
joined Sertoma because her Mom, who was Noon Sertoma’s first
woman president, made her. Actually Missy said Karen Owen
made Sertoma part of their family orientation while she was
growing up so she feels “at home” here. Missy is a
trained nurse and works as an RN in OB/Peds at St. Joseph’s. She
cannot give up that career even though she and her husband just
purchased and remodeled the Log Cabin Bar and Restaurant.
The Restaurant part has been open since before Christmas and the
Bar recently held its grand opening. It is located at 320 7th
Street across from the downtown Bremer Bank. Missy remarked,
“T.J.’s has been a learning experience but it has also been
fun.” She and Tom have been married for two years and as
yet do not have a family. They do enjoy their Kinship
Partner who is 10. Missy has been in Sertoma for four
months. |

| Of Note: |
|
| George
Moore recognized and thanked all the Sertomans who volunteered for
the Brat sale which raised about $900. He also thanked Cub
Foods for offering us this opportunity. |
|
| Rory
Coit recognized and thanked the folks who worked the rodeo.
With a limited menu of brats, hot dogs, chips, and candy the group
raised $925 for projects, got some excellent PR from the rodeo
announcers, and paved the way for future opportunities at special
Fair Grounds events. |

| Two of
our scholarship recipients, Maria Swenson and Nancy Cross, sent
thank you’s to the club. |

| Photos Photos Everywhere New photos
go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This
community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the
opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as
well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to
thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive
feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the
