It
was an interesting turn of events to see about 20% of Rory’s
graduating class from Verona, North Dakota, in attendance at
today’s meeting since today’s speaker, the Executive Director of
the Second Harvest North Central Food Bank-- Susan Estee--
graduated with Rory in a class of eleven. This
organization is based in Grand Rapids, and serves the area from
International Falls to Princeton. They have a huge warehouse and
three refrigerated trucks to keep non profit organizations such as
food shelves, soup kitchens and group homes supplied with most of
the items in their inventory. This amounts to 250,000 pounds of
food products to 100 hunger relief agencies monthly. The
organization was founded to act as a “food recycler” and keep much
needed outdated or surplus food from being wasted. It counts all
the major food producers among their contributors and their
biggest competition today is the dollar stores. Susan compared her
group to the wholesalers and the recipients to retailers. They
give the food away, but they do have to charge a minimum fee for
handling. Some of the products that they buy with donations and
these funds include toilet paper, paper towels, peanut butter and
tuna.
With tongue in cheek, Rick Besmehn suggested that the bear
hunters in Grand Rapids would certainly be willing to take the
spoiled food off their hands since that is one of their biggest
expenses. Susan’s major reason for appearing before our
“intimidating” very large group (she was not prepared for our
numbers even though attendance was down due to the Chamber Golf
Tournament) was to invite anyone who is interested in helping to
keep this worthy organization on its toes in the Brainerd area to
consider becoming a member of their board. If you are interested
she can be contacted at 218-326-4420 or emailed at
sestee@uslink.net.
Thanks Missy Lake for taking notes. The note takers from
now on will be simply whoever volunteers for the day. See Rory
before the meeting to pick up the sheet; it is very self
explanatory and easy to use. Only 48 or so people have to
volunteer once a year to cover this task that makes Pam’s job so
much easier.

| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
