Therapeutic
horse back riding-wow! A subject that is near and dear to my
heart. I personally can testify to the wonderful effects of
horseback riding. As a member of the baby boomer generation, I
started my love of horses glued to the television set watching
Roy, Gene, and the Lone Ranger. When my father wanted to move me
to the country a few years later, I dug my heels in and demanded a
horse of my own. That evolved into many many horses over the years
and a new business for my family who owned and operated a riding
stable for many years. Currently, my summer riding buddy is an
almost eighty year old lady who claims that every ride we take is
“therapeutic” and I agree with her. When you watch her run up and
down the stairs in her home, you would also feel the same way.
Aggie Stroot, Program Director and Business Manager of Mounted
Eagles, stood before Sertoma to invite us to be a part of her
program. Mounted Eagle mission statement says, “Mounted Eagles
will enhance lives by providing a safe and enjoyable environment
where individuals with special needs benefit from therapeutic,
developmental and education equine assisted activities.” What this
amounts to is offering free or low cost lessons to all types of
people with what the program prefers to call “challenges”. Lessons
take place at the Clare B Training Center on County Rd 22 near
Brainerd.
The most moving part of the program was listening to the first
“graduate” of the local program which is part of a nationwide
effort, Amy Roth. When a horse walks, the movement mimics that of
a human's gait, allowing Mounted Eagles' participants to feel the
muscles they need to use in order to walk for themselves. As the
horse moves, it is strengthening their muscles. Horseback riding
also gives them a trusting friend to learn to count on. Amy has
cerebral palsy and started riding horses at a very young age. She
talked about the wonderful bond she formed with the volunteers who
run the program as well as the animals. Amy explained that
everyone emphasizes what you can “do” and puts you in the company
of people you can relate to because they have challenges also.
“Horses don’t judge you, they take you for what you are,” remarked
Amy. Amy concluded her part of the speech by quoting the unknown
author who said, “The expert in anything was once a beginner.”
Aggie took back the microphone to invite us to participate in
their upcoming fundraiser called Walk n Roll which will take place
on Saturday, September 18th on the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway. It
includes a 5 or 12 mile walk or ½ Marathon Run which stars at the
Gateway Gazebo and ends at Moonlite Bay Restaurant. Their live
comedy show on Saturday September 18th at the Pequot Lakes School
will feature guest celebrity Louie Anderson with all proceeds
going to Mounted Eagles. Sertomans are encouraged to support the
program by walking, running or attending the show. Last year’s
event raised about $16,000. Sixty eight riders were able to take
advantage of the program last year and they are hoping to expand.
You might even consider becoming one of their volunteers. For more
information about this wonderful program, go to

Thanks Jeff Kozitza for taking notes. The note takers from now
on will be simply whoever volunteers for the day. See Rory before
the meeting to pick up the sheet; it is very self explanatory and
easy to use. Only 48 or so people have to volunteer once a year to
cover this task that makes Pam’s job so much easier. |

| Announcements |
| See Gus or Pam for badge updates.
These are usually done quarterly but if enough demand occurs,
can be done more often. |
| Wendy Johnson and Nancy Hallam have
stepped up and taken on the job of heads of the Rookie Party
Committee. |
| Remember to pick up your volunteer cards
at the door and fill them out on a weekly basis as you
complete volunteer work for Sertoma. Rookies remember to turn
your card into Kris Welle. Regular members can just place the
cards in the bucket when badges and quarter are collected. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

Dave Pundt has been appointed head of the Commission which will
investigate (quote) “the appalling commercialism rampant at the
Sertoma meetings”. He reports directly to Paul Koering who was one
of the chief persons involved in inspiring the commission. Charlie
Bartels is also a member since Bartels Clean Up Service
specializes in service where “unlike politicians we don’t charge
if we do not do the job!” If the commission has time it will also
investigate the announced cases of real estate price fixing. Also
under investigation will be the mysterious disappearance of the
Sertoma pens which our acting President, Dave Clausen, admitted he
could not find. Perhaps the Commission could look into whether or
not they have been ordered. |

go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This
community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the
opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as
well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to
thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive
feedback for a big event in their life. If you wish to view the
