Our
message for today was that Lakeland Public Television KAWE/KAWB
has something for everyone and was brought to you courtesy of
Dan Hegstad, Station Manager of our local branch. Some brief
background told us that Minnesota is rather unique in its
independence of public television and radio, that Brainerd
started its station in 1980 (ask Kathy Christensen what a
champagne bottle in her office has to do with this fact), and
that Brainerd came on board in 1988. Dan talked about the
quality of news offered by the station including the new
Frontline series starting this fall, the BBC News which gives
the viewer the global outlook twice a day, and the local news
which comes on at 10:00 and gives the commercial news programs a
run for their money. This is due to the fact that an opportune
association with Syracuse University sends a new batch of
talented interns out to the wilds of Minnesota to get first-hand
reporting experience for a year. An amusing sidelight to this
part of the report was a spontaneous thank you from Bob Nibbe
who sincerely felt that the presence of the camera crew from the
news speeded up the restoration of power to his neighborhood
after last year's tornado. The station has been broadcasting
digitally since May as per requirements from the FCC. Special
events coming up include a digital demonstration as part of the
Open House on Sunday September 7th from noon to 3:00 p.m. Bring
your camera and meet Clifford the Big Red Dog, win door prizes,
enjoy cake and refreshments and bring the children for the ZOOM
activities. Other series recommended by Dan included "The Blues"
and all of the children's programs which do not exist to sell
products but instead are aimed at learning and readiness
activities for youngsters. Dan said, "Our mission is to bring
quality non commercial programs to the area." He ended his
speech with a brief plea for individual and business support to
fill the gap which cuts in state funding have left in their
budget. He went on to say that ninety percent of the viewers
remember the sponsors and have indicated that those sponsors
willingness to support public television is a factor in the
viewer's decision about where to spend their dollars. |

Tami Webb is still looking for anybody, nobody, somebody, and
everybody to help her fulfill the requirements for GEM status for
the club this year. Pam Sachs brought a guest, Tim Livingstone
from Bremer Bank who joined and became somebody. Thanks Tim. Not
only has he joined, but he took an application promising another
member. |
|
Beth Burnard thanked all the Sertomans who helped her raise money
for the Cancer Society. The club contributed $400 through their
individual contributions through Beth. Congratulations Beth on
being the FAS winner (Beth was the first person to notice that Pam
left the names out this week. Thanks Denny Benjamin for calling
also). She donated her winnings to Shoes for Haiti. That money was
joined by Pete Odell's money from last week. Thanks to both from
Tom and the kids in Haiti. |

Gossamer Ceiling crew will be making $350 for the club on Friday
with a wedding. A full crew signed up for the set up and the take
down. Thanks everyone. |

Schedule |
|
Remember: Greeters
(Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting people
at the door and getting the ticket money counted and divided
with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for the
social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties.
You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to
greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket
if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided
by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane
Rook Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.

Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our
new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy
to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any
photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow
Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job
or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
