Program
Tammy SmithRunaway children were the focus of today’s program at Sertoma. Tammy Smith from the Baxter Youth Shelter which is run by Lutheran Brotherhood. The staff includes 12-15 people, 4 fulltime and the rest part time. She began her speech with an apology--the staff member she had sent over last week saw what a large group we were and panicked . She ended her speech with the compliments “You guys were fun not scary”. Their runaway program is designed to provide young people who are in a runaway or homeless situation with 24 hour a day access top safe shelter for up to 15 days. The program provides a safe place to live as well as counseling and outreach aimed at accessing community resources. These same counseling and training is available for parents and youths who are on the verge of a runaway situation-thus providing a last ditch resource that can keep the child in the family if the situation is not based on safety factors. The shelter is located in Baxter and can be reached at 828-4383. The home can handle up to 10 kids from babies to 27 year olds. They include those from unsafe homes, foster placement disruptions, truancy and those in trouble with the law. The on site school which includes a teacher from the Minnesota Learning Center is available for those unable to attend regular schools. Some of the kids are very underprivileged and grateful for the chances they are given. Referrals come from social workers, truant officers and probation officers. The $118.45 per day cost for each youth is paid for with county funds but the shelter has a federal grant for those who are not in any programs yet. They work very hard to keep youths out of the system unless it is necessary to refer them. The session ended with a question and answer session. Tammy fas 829-7761 Jim Grant distributed her ongoing needs list which included: picnic tables, birthday gifts for kids, outside benches, gas grill, closet shelving, motion lights, building materials for projects, twin sheets, towels, snow shovels, curtains for window size 49 by 55, and a lawn mower. They are also looking for volunteers to help with remodeling, maintenance, reupholstering and painting.

Rumor Corner
  • What prominent attorney, former Sertoma president, and member in good standing returned to Sertoma today only to be named stand in sergeant (welcome back Bill O’Hara).
  • Is there going to be trouble at the Hawkinsons? Hawk got carried away fining his wife when he also got the opportunity to be stand in sergeant.
  • Les Franz also did a stand in job that included fining a brand new member (name withheld to protect Les) fas 829-7762 Bruce Heilman for breaking her mother’s ThighMaster.
  • Joe Schulte brought in two- count em - two new members both certifiable candidates to join the harem.
  • Ask Milo what is blow-up in his life these days. ( A clue, it is not a doll).
  • What other Sheik of the harem is carrying around a Viagra pen in his pocket?

(See what fun you miss when you don’t attend the weekly meetings. All of these little tidbits are intended in fun and not meant to offend.)

Find a Sawbuck Corner:
The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
Photos Photos Everywhere New photos go up almost every week on our new MSN Community homepage. This community is for the club, easy to join and gives you the opportunity to add edit or delete any photos that are posted as well as leave messages for fellow Sertomans. It is a good way to thank someone for doing a good job or give them some positive feedback for a big event in their life.
