A great deal of information was given to our local businessmen and consumers by today's guest, Jay A. Pfaender of the Better Business Bureau. According to Jay,
" Ninety eight percent of the people recognize the name but don't know what we do." The BBB Œs mission is
"to take complaints and work at trying to promote trust in the marketplace through mediation". This amounts to a four part commitment on the part of this non-profit group which actually has no enforcement powers other than peer pressure and media attention. The four prongs of the bureau's tasks include mediation, consumer education, ad-monitoring, and acting as a marketplace advocate. Almost 100% of the 11,000 written complaints registered with the Bureau are resolved. They have 24 hour fax, phone and internet connections for dealing with the 600,000 requests they get per year. The 4,500 businesses that belong provide the funding necessary to keep this program free to the public. One interesting thing we learned was the fact that the Minnesota Better Business Bureau was the first in the country. Businessmen who belonged to ad clubs formed vigilance committees to deal with false advertising that eventually lead to the establishment of the Bureau. Celebrating their 90th anniversary, 134 BBB will have their 2002 Convention in
Minnesota. Jay himself is a long time acquaintance of Mike Boen who has a summer home in the Brainerd area. His 40 person staff works out of the Fort Snelling area.

Rookie Party - Yo Ho HO and a bottle of Sertomans-Nautical Rookie Party is Huge Success.
|
|
About 100 Sertomans and significant others joined this year's Rookie group in a nautical adventure at Ernie's on Gull Lake. The party was a huge success and if you would like to see
Kevin Geodker's pictures. The nice part about this site is that if you have Sertoma pictures scanned or on your computer, you can join the community and start your own album to share. Paul Gropper won the trip to Las Vegas with air fare provided by Bursch Travel. Jenny Baker won 15, count em, 15 prizes including a
DVD player. Thanks for a job well done rookies.

Humor Corner
(Remember these--actual answers to a 6th grade history test)
4. The Greeks were a highly sculptured people, and without them we wouldn't
have history. The Greeks also had myths. A myth is a female moth. FAS 838-5190 Rick Mileski
5. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice.
They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. After his death, his career suffered a dramatic decline.
6. In the Olympic games, Greeks ran races, jumped, hurled biscuits, and threw the Java.
7. Julius Caesar extinguished himself on the battlefields of Gaul. The Ides of March murdered him because they thought he was going to be made king. Dying, he gasped out: "Tee hee, Brutus."
