Varooom, varoooom, Sertomans joined everyone else in the Brainerd Lakes Area in gearing up for the Nationals at the
Colonel's Brainerd International
Raceway. Today's speaker Scott Quick has been general manager at the track since 1998. Sixty-five full time people have been working steadily for the last 4 months to prepare for this 20th anniversary race which Scott promises will be bigger and better than ever. The event will be televised on ESPN, will involve 475 racers competing for just about two millions dollars in prize money, and looks to break track records if the cool weather holds. The facility itself has seen fifteen million dollars spent in the last year and 25 million to be spent in the coming year to continue to provide improvements. Eventually these will include a hotel. The track covers 900 acres in Unorganized Territory and is used throughout the year for private races and major events. Scott was very enthusiastic about the part the track plays in bringing visitors and business to the area. He especially wanted to tell us that the top racers consider the Brainerd Lakes area as a favorite spot and many of them spend as much time as they can here to enjoy all the outdoor activities. One hundred twenty five thousand people are expected at the races. Six hundred people, mostly local will be working there. As Scott said,
"If you have never attended a race, I encourage you to come out and see us this weekend."

Mike Howard and Camp Sertoma Club are looking for volunteers to work at Valley Fair.
16 people are required to make this project work. This could turn into a yearly event and could raise a lot of money for the Camp Sertoma operating fund. Right now they are
looking for 16-20 club members to work from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The jobs will be assigned when you get there and could include anything from selling
tickets to picking up garbage. The sheet will be going around the meetings. This could be a chance for a family outing with you working and the kids
paying and playing.

Sertoman of the Day

Kim Hauglie sponsored Bob McBeath as a Sertoman and he recently joined our club. Bob is the Outreach Coordinator for Advertising and Marketing for the Crosby Eye Clinic which also has offices in Baxter. Bob's wife's name is Joyce, one son has graduated from college, the other is still attending and he has a sophomore daughter. That is the reason why Bob commutes to his job in Crosby and still lives in Bloomington. He is a graduate of St. Cloud State but has spent most of his working career in association with eye care. He is very much interested in youth sports and is currently serving as the vice president of the Bloomington Athletic Association. He proved that he had a sense of humor with his most embarrassing moment story as well as the conclusion of his speech which was a fine Minnesota Norwegian joke. FAS 838-5190 Scott Fisher His motto is
"help yourself by helping others" which certainly is well suited to the Sertoma Club endeavors. Welcome Bob.

Attention all Sertomans: Mike Howard was a very disappointed person at today's meeting. He was the only person who showed up to set up the Breezy Point Pipe and Drape. Everyone needs to get more involved in this activity.

Project Lead Ten Brainerd noon Sertomans traveled to Fargo this past weekend to take part in Project Lead Training. The object of the conference was to take a diverse group of new and old Sertomans from the area and give them the skills and knowledge necessary to go back to their groups as better leaders and/or
members. Bob Breffie, Loren Lind, Sheila Reding, and Jeff Wilkes were the presenters and they did an excellent job of presenting information and soliciting information from the group as a whole which included about 30 people. Brenda Meech, Jenny Baker, Tami Webb, Kari Robinson, Jo Lovitz, Mike Howard, Paul Gropper, Rory Coit Karla Nelson and Pam Sachs attended.
The following are a few outstanding words of wisdom gleaned from 8 hours of concentrated study
with a few diversions into silliness as you can tell by the photos.
A special thank you to Mike Howard for being such a "good driver", to Tami Webb for being in charge, and to Brenda Meech for being our tour guide.

- There is no "I" in team.
- The fact that communication is usually one way is the problem-questions are important.
- There is a difference between hearing and listening.
- Pride leads to new membership.
- Sertoma is an organization that allows clubs to sponsor any and all worthwhile activities from Christmas in the Park in North Dakota to Camp Sertoma in Brainerd.
- To be a good speaker, you don't have to be perfect . . . it is your passion and energy that the audience will remember
- You SHOULD get some personal satisfaction out of volunteering.
- Being a leader is a developed process.
- A good leader is the master of follow-up.
- Leaders can bring about change.
