Tony Sailer, well-known local figure associated with sports, was today's speaker at Sertoma. Tony was formerly the sports and outdoors reporter for the Brainerd Daily Dispatch, but his current title is Recreation Specialist for the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Board. Tony has taken his experiences reporting on outdoor activities to a different level. He emphasized the hard work involved in tournament planning. His specific topic for Sertomans was the impact that the Parks and Recreation Softball and Baseball programs have on the community. Besides all the equipment that local players purchase (local kids from the ages of 3-15 were 1,007 strong this year), baseball brought about 1,185 persons into the area for tournaments just counting players and coaches .Softball probably accounted for about 435 visitors. Parks and Rec hosted 3 state baseball qualifying tournaments, 4 state baseball tournament , and one world series that involved youth from the ages of 11-16, their coaches, families and friends. Many of these people stayed at least one night in the area if they were not local and some stayed as much as 7 nights. The World Series tournament involved teams from as far away as Iowa; Ohio; and Seattle, Washington. The Washington team spent about $1,000 a day for player expenses in the World Series. The Softball Program included two softball tournaments for 16 and 18 year olds from the Minnesota Sports Federation Junior Olympic Association. Our summer youth programs involves three divisions: Petite, Junior and Senior leagues, with ages ranging from 9-15. Tony concluded his speech by saying, "The Parks and Recreation softball and baseball programs do have a huge impact on the Brainerd
community. "FAS 838-5190 Julie Degan

Mike Howard and Camp Sertoma Club are looking for volunteers to work at Valley Fair.
16 people are required to make this project work. This could turn into a yearly event and could raise a lot of money for the Camp Sertoma operating fund. Right now they are
looking for 16-20 club members to work from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The jobs will be assigned when you get there and could include anything from selling
tickets to picking up garbage. The sheet will be going around the meetings. This could be a chance for a family outing with you working and the kids
paying and playing.

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
In the absence of a Sertoman of the Day, we will see some actual sixth grade answers to history test questions. There are more to come.
1. Ancient Egypt was inhabited by mummies and they all wrote in
hydraulics. They lived in the Sarah Dessert. The climate of the Sarah is such that the inhabitants have to live elsewhere.
2. Moses led the Hebrew slaves to the Red Sea, where they made unleavened
bread, which is bread made without any ingredients. Moses went up on Mount
Cyanide to get the ten commandments. He died before he ever reached Canada.
3. Solomon had three hundred wives and seven hundred porcupines.
